Yang's drop-off last year was astounding. He went from nearly $2.5 million to less than $500K. Usually when a player of his caliber goes missing like that, there's an injury to blame. That wasn't the case with Yang, though, he simply lost his game last year. Fortunately, he's still exempt because of his win at the 2009 PGA Championship. Yang is simply too good to miss the top 125 again, and as such, he's a must-have at his price. In draft leagues, he could be taken anywhere in the second half of the draft.
Yang earned more than $2 million last season in only 18 starts. In those 18 starts, he made the cut 14 times, which included five Top-10s, a runner-up and a third-place finish. Yang hasn't exactly struggled since capturing the PGA Championship three years ago, but he hasn't taken a step toward the next level, either. The promising news is after suffering a predictable major-hangover in 2010, Yang bounced back nicely in 2011, improving in all aspects. If he can continue this ascent, he could get back to the $3-million mark and again compete at the majors. In draft leagues, consider Yang in the late-third round, though he'll likely fall to the fourth round.
Yang was among the group of first-time major winners in 2009 that suffered setbacks in 2010. Among the three first-time major winners, Yang struggled the most last year. Yang's drop in production was quite a surprise, as not only did he win the PGA Championship in 2009, but he also won the Honda Classic earlier in the year. It looked as though Yang was the real deal, and he still might be, which means he's probably worth a look at the right price. Yang's stats are nothing to write home about. The last two years he's excelled at putting or GIR, but not during the same season, and his driving is just average in both accuracy and distance.
Yang surprised everyone by taking on Tiger Woods on Sunday at the PGA Championship and exiting with his first major win. While Yang came out of nowhere at the PGA Championship, he was actually playing well under the radar prior to that weekend. Yang captured his first PGA Tour win at the Honda Classic in March and also earned four top-10s in 2009. Unfortunately, it's hard to gauge how good Yang actually is because he has not played much in the United States. It looks like Yang is the type of player who shows extremely well in spurts, but he'll need to be more consistent in 2010 if he hopes to top his 2009 production. He made the second best leap, 447 places, from 478th (end of 2008) to rank 31st at the final 2009 Official World Golf Rankings.
