Armour didn't lose strokes from tee to green in a measured event from January's Sony Open through June's Travelers Championship, but he still finished just 166th in the FedExCup standings with only nine made cuts on the PGA Tour all season. The 46-year-old headed to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals where he placed T22-T5 at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship and the KFT Championship to retain status on the PGA Tour. Armour led the PGA Tour in driving accuracy this past season, though he ranked just 190th in birdie average.
Armour had a much better latter half of the 2020-21 season, but even three top-10s in his last eight events weren't enough to get him into the playoffs. The tour veteran has struggled to make cuts on a regular basis, playing the weekend only 41 percent of the time the last two seasons. He tried and failed to retain his card through the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, which means he won't have nearly as many opportunities for starts on tour this season.
After back-to-back top-10s shortly into the Tour's restart of play, Armour missed the cut in four of his final five events to slow the momentum. Armour picked up his first win three years ago at 41-years-old, but his lack of distance off-the-tee gives him little margin for error in the other aspects of his game. Because he doesn't excel at any parts of his game, it's usually best to look at other players with more upside.
After years of struggling to stay inside the top-125 each season, Armour broke-out big time in 2018 when he earned over $2.4million and picked-up his first PGA Tour victory. After five seasons of zero upside, Armour suddenly showed a side that most didn't know existed. Tough he retained his card last season, it was certainly a let-down after what he had accomplished the year prior. There's no way to tell which direction he goes this season, but it's safe to say that he's not worth a salary cap pick this year as he hasn't shown any consistency to this point in his career.
Prior to last season, Armour had a per start average of $17,836. To put that in perspective, if he were to play 30 events per season, he'd make somewhere around $535k. Not bad for your average Joe, but not good enough to keep you PGA Tour card. Fortunately for Armour, he blew that average out of the water last season when he picked up his first PGA Tour win at Sanderson Farms Championship. That win came in fall 2017, but it sets him up for this season as well as the season after. Armour doesn't have to worry about keeping his card this season and salary cap owners don't have to worry about selecting him. Armour had no track record of success prior to his win last fall and as of now, that win is the outlier. Until that changes, there's no reason to consider him in salary cap leagues.
For a second straight year Armour earned his way to the PGA Tour, but this time around it was his strong work early in the Web.com Tour Finals that netted him full exemption. Armour last season used a second-round 61 at the Wyndham Championship to post his lone top-10, but if can somehow find a way to improve his short game he's got potential to improve on last seasons earnings.
Armour was 12th on the Web.com regular-season money list, so he's back for another go-round on the PGA Tour. But he's 40 years old and has played only 83 Tour events going back to his 2007 debut season. This could be his final ride at the PGA Tour rodeo.
The 38-year-old Ohioan used five top 10s, including a runner-up, to finish in the top 25 on the Web.com Tour regular-season money list, which is a good thing, since he missed the last three cuts of the playoffs. At 40th in the priority ranking, getting 20 PGA Tour starts will be difficult. Armour played two PGA seasons, in 2007-08, with three top 10s. Don’t expect him to play two consecutive seasons this time around.
