It's safe to say that Calcavecchia's better days are behind him, but he has won a tournament in two of the last five seasons and still has some fantasy upside. The disturbing thing with Calcavecchia is the pattern that's developed throughout that time period. Each season after winning a tournament, he's fallen off the map and has failed to reach the $1-million mark. Calcavecchia did not reach that number last season either, so while he could have a rebound season, it's doubtful that he will reach $2 million in winnings in 2010.
Calcavecchia's performance in 2007 is certainly difficult to explain. The year prior he had many health issues and earned just over 700k. Health issues seem to be a problem for Calcavecchia frequently, but he managed to get through the season last year fairly unscathed. Can he do it again? History says no. The last two times he's reached the $2 million mark, he's regressed the following season. He won't fall back below $1 million this year, but he'll come in well below his 2007 mark. Calcavecchia underwent knee surgery on October 14 after trying for three months, or more, to fight his way through the pain.
To his credit, Calcavecchia is still hanging in there. Calc has been dealing with several health issues the past few years and it certainly has affected his game. At this point, there's no way to tell what kind of shape he'll be in for 2007, which makes him a risky pick.
Calcavecchia had a really nice season in 2005, but how long he can keep it up? He's been battling health problems for the last few years and it seemed as though everything had caught up with Calc last year. But to everyone's surprise he pulled out a victory at the Bell Canadian Open. He then went on a pretty nice run throughout the fall season.. To make your money back on Calcavecchia this year, he's going to have to win somewhere along the line. That's not likely.
