It took a clutch fifth-place effort at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship in October for Teater to break into the top-30 on the points list, and he finished the 2023 KFT season ranked sixth in GIR percentage. The 44-year-old averaged a disappointing 29.80 putts per round, however. Teater has experience on his side with 221 total PGA Tour events played, though he remains winless.
Playing out the 126-150 category, Teater played in 15 events but missed nine cuts. One of his cashes, however, was runner-up at the oppo Puerto Rico Open, something that can't be counted on again for this season.
Teater has not made the FedExCup playoffs since 2013. He started last season with just one top-25 in 21 starts, but went T6-T13-T6 his last three events. His close last season combined with the fact he was 85th in SG: Total and eighth in GIR's, leaves a little encouragement going into the 2019-20 season.
Teater is slated to turn the big 4-0 in April, but the aging golfer has earned a full schedule on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2014 when he posted zero top-10s in 28 starts. In 2017-18 on the Web.com Tour he finished 15th on the regular-season money list with two runner-ups and eight top-25s. Despite ranking fifth in GIR percentage, Teater fell to 70th in birdie average due to struggles with the putter.
On the whole, Teater had a pretty good 2013 season, but most of his earnings came during the first-half of the season. Teater had three top-10s in 2013 and they all came prior to June. After June, Teater only cracked the top-50 once. It's been more of the same during the 2013-2014 portion of the schedule as he's a perfect 4-4 on cuts made, but he's only cracked the top-25 one time. Teater doesn't have much of a problem making cuts, but his play on the weekend needs improvement. As such, he's not a good salary cap option this year and he should go in the 70-80 range in drafts.
The first six months last year, Josh Teater couldn't get out of his own way. Then something clicked. In a stretch from late July through early August, Teater earned three consecutive top-10s, nearly securing his card for 2013. He needed a couple more decent outings to wrap up his card, accomplishing that with a top-20 at The Barclays. Teater improved from 2011 to 2012, but not by much. He hasn't shown enough to justify a selection in a salary cap leagues, but he could be worth a late draft pick.
Teater played well in his rookie season of 2010, but last year he struggled for much of the season. In fact, after the season's first sixth months, Teater was on a direct path to Q-School, but a solid finish during the fall season was enough to get off that path and get him his card for this season. Although Teater earned his card for the second time, he's has yet to do much with that card. Expect the same this year as Teater will again scratch and claw all season to retain his card.
All in all, Josh Teater had a fine rookie campaign in 2010. His best showings were a third-place finish at the Turning Stone Resort Championship in August and a fifth-place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February. In addition to those two top-10s, Teater also carded eight top-25s. Not bad for a rookie. His solid performance on the PGA TOUR came a year after he finished seventh on the Nationwide money list in 2009. The future looks bright for Teater, who finished in the top 100 in three of four core stat categories. He excelled in driving distance and GIR, ranking 44th and 45th last season.
