If healthy, Olazabal could earn $200K or so this season and you might as well try and find a spot for him. Olazabal played in only six events last season and made the cut only once, but that is to our benefit because his price is now rock bottom. It was only a few years ago that he nearly earned $1 million, so who knows? Maybe he can find his game for a short stretch this season and blow his 2011 numbers out of the water.
Olazabal who is 42 in January 2008, is targeting the Dubai Desert Classic, January 31 - February 3, 2008 for his first 2008 event. Having been away from competition for some time makes Olazabal a risky choice - wait to see his game under pressure.
Olazabal has been written off several times over the last 10 years, but he refuses to go away. The problem with Olazabal when looking ahead to 2007 is that he didn't accomplish much after April last year. While it is dangerous to write him off again, don't expect him to improve upon last years' performance.
Olazabal has sandwiched two poor years with two good ones. In 2002, he earned nearly $2 million, then he fell off for consecutive years where he failed to crack $500k. Last year he came close to $2 million again. The picture I am painting here is this. Olazabal's high end is about $2 million and his low end is less than $500k. Not exactly the type of player on which you want to spend $1.75 million.
