Headed to practice squad IL
The Bears placed Sweeney (undisclosed) on the practice squad injured list Thursday, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweeney joined the Bears' practice squad Oct. 9 after failing to make the 53-man roster at the conclusion of training camp. It's unclear what is hindering the 2019 seventh-round pick, but he is ineligible to be called up from the practice squad to the active roster for at least four regular-season games. The earliest Sweeney would be able to be elevated would be against the Vikings on Sunday, Nov. 24. With Sweeney on practice squad IR, Chicago signed tight end Joel Wilson to the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Sweeney's teammate O.J. Howard was released by the Bills in late August. Howard, a 2017 first-rounder, never really shined for the Bills this summer while Sweeney took a big step forward, as he's been praised by the coaching staff for weeks. Unless the Bills bring in a veteran, he's set to serve as the No. 2 tight end behind Dawson Knox, the takeaway being that the former would get plenty of looks in a high-powered offense should Knox ever go down with injury.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Roster spot not guaranteed
Sweeney will be competing for a roster spot during training camp following the offseason acquisition of O.J. Howard, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweeney has appeared in 19 games during his first two seasons in the NFL, totaling 17 receptions on 25 targets for 158 yards and one touchdown. However, after having a relatively easy path to a roster spot in each of those campaigns, the 2019 seventh-round pick now faces his stiffest training-camp competition yet. Howard has never quite lived up to his first-round pedigree, due mostly to injuries, but he'll a chance to revitalize his career in Buffalo. Regardless, Howard would really have to impress this offseason to make the Bills feel comfortable rolling into the regular season with just two tight ends.
