Cut by Washington, career over
Washington released Davis (knee) on Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Davis missed Washington's final three games of the 2020 season -- including a playoff loss to the Buccaneers -- due to a knee injury. The transaction was simply procedural, as Davis was set to become a free agent in March and had already announced plans to retire. Assuming Davis doesn't have a change of heart, he'll end his NFL career with 1,216 tackles, 55 pass breakups, 29 sacks and 13 interceptions over 199 regular-season games. According to Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer, Davis will soon sign a one-day contract with the Panthers to retire with the team that drafted him.

Davis and coach Ron Rivera have opted for a reunion after one year apart. The gap year for Rivera saw him fired in Carolina, while Davis started all 16 games for disappointing Chargers team and finished with a six-year high of 112 tackles. The 37-year-old linebacker isn't much of a playmaker at this point in his career, but Davis is arguably the best bet for a three-down role in a position group where Jon Bostic, Reuben Foster, Cole Holcomb and Shaun Dion Hamilton also will be competing for snaps. IDP value is far from assured, but it's not out of the question either.
