The Seahawks signed Boykin to their practice squad Wednesday, John Boyle of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Boykin was cut from the Giants' practice squad at the beginning of September, but he's now found a new opportunity in Seattle. Boykin drew 55 targets over his first two professional campaigns with the Ravens, but his role declined significantly over the past two years. During his first season with the Steelers in 2022, the 2019 third-rounder was limited mainly to work on special teams, while securing two of his three targets for 11 yards in 16 games. Pittsburgh acquired Allen Robinson during the offseason, so even though Boykin's special-teams abilities may earn him a spot on the team's initial roster, he'll likely have difficulty climbing the depth chart.
Boykin dealt with various injuries in 2021, and he played mainly on special teams for the Ravens when he was healthy. After recording 464 receiving yards over his first two professional seasons, he was limited to just one reception for six yards last year. Following his disappointing performance in 2022, Boykin will remain in the division to compete for a role among Pittsburgh's receiving corps that lost JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington and Ray-Ray McCloud during the offseason.
Boykin was given plenty of opportunity to make an impact in his second season, playing the second-most snaps of any Baltimore receiver in 2020. Unfortunately, Boykin didn't capitalize, drawing just 33 targets in 16 games. He caught 19 of them for 266 yards and four touchdowns but that wasn't enough to dissuade Baltimore from beefing up its receiver depth this offseason by bringing in Sammy Watkins and a pair of draft picks, including first-rounder Rashod Bateman. Boykin's time as a starter may be over, and his target rate per snap can ill afford any reduction in playing time. Boykin's opportunity in Baltimore may have already come and gone.
Taken with the 93rd pick in the 2019 draft, Boykin had a quiet rookie year with only 22 targets, though he did score three times and had a catch of 40-plus yards. At 6-4, 220, Boykin is massive and ran a 4.42 40 at the combine - unusual wheels for someone that big - and posted a ridiculous 43.5-inch vertical leap, the highest in his class. In Year 2, he should get a chance for a bigger role, though slot specialist Willie Snead is still around and the Ravens drafted Devin Duvernay in the third round. There's also no assurance of playing time leading to targets in an offense that led the NFL with 596 rush attempts last season.
The third-rounder out of Notre Dame has a path to a starting job as a rookie considering the draft capital spent on him along with the departure of two starting receivers from last year's roster. Boykin is an outside receiver at 6-4 and 220 pounds, and he put together one of the most impressive performances of this year's combine. His vertical was tops in the class among receivers and his 4.42 40-yard dash was extremely impressive when adjusting for his size. In terms of his fit in Baltimore, he can occupy the Michael Crabtree role of being a possession receiver who gives Lamar Jackson a big and reliable target in the short and intermediate passing game. While Boykin should have an immediate role, the volume may be lacking overall given Baltimore's run-heavy offense that does not feature a high percentage of throws outside the numbers.

WRPittsburgh Steelers

Eric Edholm of NFL.com wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers cut Boykin before the start of the regular season.
ANALYSIS
Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and George Pickens are locked into the top three spots at wide receiver, but things get murky after that. Rookie fourth-round pick Calvin Austin's a safe bet to make the team as well despite a recent foot injury, which could leave Boykin, Gunner Olszewski and Cody White battling for one spot if the Steelers only keep five wide receivers. Moreover, Olszewski is the most accomplished special-teams player of that bunch.
