Kahale Warring

Warring was a mildly surprising third-round selection out of San Diego State in 2019. A late bloomer who didn't start playing football until college, Warring joined the Texans, which drafted two tight ends the previous season and signed free agent Darren Fells by the time of the 2019 draft. Concussion and hamstring woes wiped out Warring's entire season, but he's healthy and ready compete at a crowded position group. The 23-year-old is considered a project, but at 6-foot-5 with impressive athleticism, the Texans are willing to take the gamble.

The Texans liked Warring enough to draft him in the third round of the 2019 draft. This, after the team selected a pair of tight ends (Jordan Akins and Jordan Thomas) in the 2018 draft. Now that Houston departed from long-time starter Ryan Griffin, any one of these players could emerge as the top receiving tight end, although Warring probably needs seasoning. Veteran Darren Fells was signed during the offseason and provides the best blocking skills of the group. As a walk-on at San Diego State after not playing football in high school, Warring is considered a late-bloomer with athleticism and upside. It doesn't help that he started training camp on the PUP list with an undisclosed injury.
