The United States Department of Justice announced Thursday that Bellamy (shoulder) was arrested on multiple fraud charges for his alleged participation in a scheme to receive loans intended for COVID-19 relief.
ANALYSIS
Bellamy's arrest comes one day after he was released by the Jets in a decision that was believed to be related to the season-ending shoulder injury he suffered in May. According to the report, Bellamy received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan worth than $1.2 million for his entertainment company, with the Department of Justice alleging that the 31-year-old used the proceeds of the loan for personal rather than business use. Bellamy was scheduled to appear in a Florida court Thursday in connection with the charges.

Bellamy's real-life contributions far outweigh his fantasy impact, as the hard-working veteran is a terrific locker room guy and contributes to both the blocking and coverage units on special teams. The former Bears receiver has never exceeded 24 catches, 376 yards or two touchdowns in a season, and Bellamy should remain a fantasy afterthought in his first year with the Jets.
Entering his seventh NFL season, Bellamy hasn't caught more than 24 passes in any campaign. Due to injuries and a weak receiving corps, he had the most productive four-game stretch of his career when he posted 20 receptions for 201 yards in Weeks 14 through 17 last year. Despite the strong finish, the Bears added three new wideouts that profile to top the depth chart, which could place Bellamy in a position in which he could find himself fighting for a roster spot. Should he make the 53-man, he likely will continue to function in a reserve role, and his fantasy value would be suppressed unless the team suffered injuries at the position.
Bellamy's entering his sixth year in the league, and he's caught exactly 19 passes in each of the past two seasons. He'll be part of a crowded depth chart at wide receiver, and he'll need a number of injuries to occur at the position in order to secure significant playing time.
Bellamy will open the season as a third-string outside receiver for the Bears. In his four-year career, he's only caught 19 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He would likely need multiple injuries at wide receiver to earn significant playing time.
Bellamy stuck around on the Bears’ practice squad for most of last season, but managed to suit up in four games for the team. He would finish with no catches on just one target in those contests, as most of his duties came on special teams. The Bears don’t seem to be eager to carve out a larger offensive role for Bellamy, so his path to making the 53-man roster out of camp will again come in his ability to perform well on multiple special teams units.
Bellamy was one of a slew of players competing for the final receiver job and special teams duties in training camp for the Bears, but he failed to claim a spot on the 53-man roster.
Bellamy will compete for the chance to provide depth at wide receiver after spending most of the 2012 season on the practice squad.
Bellamy, an undrafted rookie, has an outside chance of landing on the Chiefs' active roster if he displays the promising athleticism and playmaking ability in the preseason that he flashed during OTA's. However, even if he can steal the fifth receiver spot in Kansas City, he's unlikely to be useful as a rookie in even the deepest of formats.
