Watt announced Tuesday via his personal Instagram account that he has retired from professional football.
ANALYSIS
Watt last suited up for Pittsburgh in 2022, and he served as the Steelers' top fullback for three seasons after beginning his career in 2016 with the Chargers, who drafted him in the sixth round. With the 31-year-old now hanging up the cleats, Pittsburgh star pass rusher T.J. Watt (knee) is the last of three Watt brothers remaining in the NFL, with J.J. Watt having retired after the 2022 season.

Watt appeared in all 17 games for the Steelers last year but saw most of his playing time on special teams. The 29-year-old has recorded just four touches over his first two years in Pittsburgh and is unlikely to see meaningful work in 2022 after Najee Harris impressed as a rookie last season.
Watt appeared in 12 games during his first season with the Steelers in 2020, but he didn't record any touches. He'll likely serve as the starting fullback for Pittsburgh this year, but he hasn't recorded more than seven touches in any of his first five years in the NFL.
In three seasons with the Chargers, Watt has accumulated just 159 total yards despite playing in all 48 games, so it's fair to suggest the fullback is not an integral fantasy item. While he's never seen more than 146 offensive snaps in a given season, he's an important blocking piece for a team that puts a significant priority on the run game.
Watt primarily operates as the lead blocker for Melvin Gordon, a job he performed well in 2017 as the RB tallied over 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career. While the less-famous Watt brother will never be a focal point of the offense, he has been known to flash receiving skills on occasion.
Watt hardly factored in the Chargers' offense, mainly serving as a lead blocker for collegiate teammate Melvin Gordon in his rookie season. With Danny Woodhead out the door and on to Baltimore, there's a chance Watt could come in on obvious passing downs to act as another pass blocker, but he's not expected to see enough snaps to warrant fantasy consideration.
Watt, the Chargers' sixth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, will reunite with collegiate teammate Melvin Gordon after the two combined to terrorize opposing Big Ten defenses during their time with the Wisconsin Badgers. The brother of All-Pro defensive lineman J.J. Watt, Derek will primarily be used as a blocking fullback and likely won't contribute enough counting stats to become fantasy relevant.
