Harris' first season with the Chargers was arguably his worst of his ilustrious career, playing just nine games while recording a single interception. The addition of Asante Samuel Jr. could push Harris back inside covering the slot where he struggled at times in 2020, but it's more likely an offseason emphasis on versatile secondary pieces will allow the long-time veteran to play wherever he might be comfortable.
How much longer does Harris, the last holdover from Denver's Super-Bowl secondary, have in Mile High? The cornerback -- who logged 49 tackles and three picks in 12 games last season -- has one season remaining on a team-friendly deal and is looking for a top-market contract just as he turns 30-years-old. The veteran has notched multiple interceptions for seven straight years and is known as one of the league's better tackling corners, while minimizing gains when opponents do manage to make the catch. If he stays, it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts to Vic Fangio's defense and other moves Denver made this offseason. Playing on the outside and in more zone coverage could help Harris play the ball more and generate more interceptions. At the same time, it'd be a departure from the kind of play -- generally in man coverage and in the slot -- that has put him in position to seek big money.
Despite years of accolades and league-leading performance metrics, Harris was often outshined by his more physically dominant, flamboyant partner, Aqib Talib. Harris has intercepted two passes in each of the last three seasons, but is not the pick-six threat Talib was -- scoring just once in the past five seasons. It'll be interesting to see if his opportunities decrease with Talib's absence as opposing offenses look elsewhere for yards. Would an opposing quarterback prefer to throw at Harris, a three-time All-Pro, or less proven options such as Bradley Roby and rookie Isaac Yiadom?
Ranked as Pro Football Focus' top corner of 2016, Harris is a better player than fantasy IDP. He tallied 63 tackles in 2016 to go along with 11 passes defended, two picks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The former undrafted free agent out of Kansas has been a very consistent performer, with at least 49 tackles and two or three picks in each season since 2012. He has two things working uniquely in his favor. One, more so than other top corners, Harris is able to switch back and forth between the outside and slot -- making it difficult for opponents to take him out of his comfort zone. Secondly, Harris' flashier teammate, Aqib Talib, ranked as Pro Football Focus' second-best corner of 2016. While opponents can generally avoid top corners by throwing to the other side of the field, opposing offenses have little choice, but to throw at Harris or Talib, often at their own peril.
Harris has picked off three passes in each of the last three seasons, and he continues to get plenty of balls thrown his way with Aqib Talib on the other side of the field. He has recorded between 50 and 60 tackles in each of the last four years, so he's a bit limited in most IDP formats, but he will at least be a starting corner for deeper leagues.
Harris is recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered during the playoffs last season, which forced him to miss the AFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. However, he is on track to begin practicing at the end of July, so he could very well be up to speed by the time Week 1 rolls around. That being said, he's unlikely to see significant snaps as a starting cornerback with the Broncos bringing on Aqib Talib via free agency and Bradley Roby via the draft.

Looking to join contender
CBFree Agent
May 20, 2023
In an interview with Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette on Thursday, Harris stated that he will not take part in training camp and will bide his time before looking to join a team.
ANALYSIS
Harris joined the Saints' practice squad last October and was eventually promoted to the active roster, recording 27 tackles and a sack in 10 games. A four-time Pro Bowler and former first-team All-Pro selection, Harris would bring plenty of veteran experience and leadership to a team looking to contend for a Super Bowl. Given that he is unwilling to participate in offseason training camps and OTAs, it's more likely that he will look to join a playoff contender during the season, perhaps one that is plagued by injuries in its secondary.
