Leno, who was released by the Commanders on Friday, is scheduled to undergo hip surgery this week, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Leno, whose release saved Washington roughly $7.3 million in cap space, has been a solid starter at left tackle since being drafted by the Bears in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Three of Leno's four missed games last season were due to a hip injury, which it looks like his upcoming surgery should address. Barring any setbacks in his recovery, the 32-year-old should garner interest as a short-term starter on the open market.

Leno hasn't missed a start since 2015 and hasn't missed a game since his 2014 rookie season. Not bad for a seventh-round pick, and while he's never been dominant, he gives the Commanders a solid starter at left tackle.
A longtime blindside starter in Chicago, Leno was cut by the Bears last offseason and ended up joining the Commanders. He had a solid year and signed a three-year extension in January, locking him in as the starter at left tackle for at least 2022 and possibly 2023 and 2024.
The Bears released Leno -- their longtime starting left tackle -- shortly after drafting Teven Jenkins in the second round this spring. Washington later picked Leno up and installed him as its starter on the blindside.
Leno, who appeared in six games for the Bears as a rookie last season, is still viewed as a developmental option along the team’s offensive line and is likely ticketed for a reserve role again in 2015. He offers the versatility to play either guard or tackle.
A seventh-round draft pick out of Boise State, Leno is set to audition for the top backup spot at left tackle during training camp. He'll have to beat out a surfeit of competitors for those duties, with Joe Long, Michael Ola and James Brown all expected to factor into the battle.

Leno has a visit with the Football Team lined up, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Leno was somewhat inconsistent during his tenure as Chicago's top left tackle, but he at least proved an ability to play at a high level when surrounded by the right talent. If things don't immediately work out with Washington, it seems likely that Leno will draw interest from other teams in need of help at the tackle spot, with the Colts being one such candidate.
