Henne announced Sunday via his personal Instagram account shortly after the Chiefs' 38-35 win over the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII that he will retire from professional football.
ANALYSIS
Though starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared to aggravate his Grade 2 high right-ankle sprain late in the second quarter of the Super Bowl, Henne's services ultimately weren't needed in the second half while Mahomes played through the pain and guided Kansas City to victory. Henne previously relieved an injured Mahomes for a brief spell in the divisional-round matchup with the Jaguars, stepping in to direct a touchdown drive before the star signal-caller returned to action. The 37-year-old Henne will walk away from the game as a two-time Super Bowl champion, with both titles coming during his five-year stint with the Chiefs. Prior to his time in Kansas City, Henne entered the NFL as a second-round pick of Miami in 2008, spending four years with the organization before a six-year stopover in Jacksonville. Henne retires with a 59.6 percent completion rate for 13,290 yards, 60 touchdowns and 63 interceptions to go with 351 rushing yards and four scores on the ground over his 78 career regular-season appearances.

One of the more experienced backups in the league, Henne appeared in four games last season for the Chiefs, though none of those came in a starting role. He should resume his assignment as Patrick Mahomes' top backup in 2022 but doesn't figure to see the field unless it's either late in a blowout or because Kansas City's star signal caller misses time.
Henne will hold down the backup quarterback spot for the Chiefs once again this year after playing just 75 total snaps during the 2020 regular season, 53 of which came in Week 17 when Patrick Mahomes was rested. The veteran signal caller shouldn't see many more snaps in 2021 as long as Mahomes stays healthy, but Henne proved capable of handling the offense when called upon, completing 73.7 percent of his pass attempts for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Henne spent the 2019 campaign as the Chiefs' third-string quarterback behind Patrick Mahomes and Matt Moore, failing to see the field once for the first time since 2015. The team decided to move on from Moore this offseason, leaving Henne as the presumed backup should anything befall Mahomes. Henne hasn't fared particularly well as a starter during his career, sporting an 18-35 record, but he would have numerous top-flight weapons to turn to should he end up filling in for Mahomes at any point.
Following several years as an on-and-off starter in Miami and Jacksonville, Henne has settled into a veteran backup role over the last few years. He appeared in just one game during the 2018 season, completing two of his three passes for 29 yards. Barring an injury to starter Patrick Mahomes, Henne should spend the majority of 2019 warming the bench behind the third-year signal-caller.
Henne signed a two-year contract to join the Chiefs -- just his third NFL team -- on a two-year deal this offseason. The departure of Alex Smith to the Redskins opened the door for Patrick Mahomes to secure the starting role, while Henne will serve as a veteran presence in the locker and film rooms, plus he should mentor the second-year quarterback. Henne should also enter the 2018 campaign unchallenged for the the team's backup job, though a couple of younger counterparts in Matt McGloin and Chase Litton will also attempt to nab a 53-man roster spot.
For the third straight year, Henne will open as the backup to Blake Bortles, whom the Jaguars are hoping will take a significant step forward this season. With experience as a starter in both Jacksonville and Miami, Henne has the tools to be a game manager should Bortles go down, but his upside remains rather limited.
Henne hasn't taken a regular season snap since early in the 2014 campaign, but that didn't stop the Jaguars from locking him up on a two-year extension in February. The former Michigan standout will continue in his role as Blake Bortles' backup, but the hope is that he won't be thrust into action.
The Jaguars declared Henne their starting quarterback prior to the 2014 season, and the intention was for the veteran to hold the job while rookie Blake Bortles learned from the sideline. That plan lasted less than three weeks, however, as Henne conceded the job to Bortles midway through a Week 3 loss to the Colts. Bortles would go on to start the rest of the season, while Henne failed to take another snap. With Bortles firmly entrenched as the franchise’s future at the position, Henne will again be relegated to backup duty in 2015.
There's an insistence among Jacksonville media that the Jaguars intend to roll with Henne as the team's starter for the entirety of the 2014 season, but it's difficult to see that happening given the selection of Blake Bortles No. 3 overall. Henne threw more interceptions (14) than touchdowns (13) as a sixth-year pro last season and led the Jaguars to a paltry 4-12 record. Unless the Jags truly are content to allow Bortles to develop at a slower pace, the rookie could challenge Henne for the starting job within a few weeks. Still, it seems Henne might have some utility early on in 2QB leagues.
Like Blaine Gabbert, Henne can't be counted on in Jacksonville because he'll also have a short leash. There's a good chance both quarterbacks will end up starting at some point during the season. Henne is probably the better bet to put up numbers because he's done it in the past on a limited basis with nine career 300-yard games. Moreover, it was under Henne that the team's top receivers – Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts – had their best games.
Henne will enter the season as the No. 2 QB behind Blaine Gabbert, who will be given every opportunity to succeed as a sophomore. It would likely take a catastrophic breakdown from Gabbert for Henne to assume the starting role, but should that happen, the former Wolverine would step into a situation better than what he had in Miami with Laurent Robinson, Justin Blackmon, MJD and Marcedes Lewis around him.
Henne figures to be one of the leagues least-safe starters heading into 2011. The Dolphins brought in former Panther Matt Moore to compete with Henne and if the latter slips up even a little bit, Moore could be called upon. With a solid offensive line and a good group of wideouts led by Brandon Marshall, there are reasons to like Hennes situation. But after consecutive years with more interceptions than touchdowns, he needs to give Miami a reason to keep him on the field before any of that matters.
People are excited by three 300-yard games in his last five starts, but they came with an absurd number of attempts. Henne has Brandon Marshall in tow now, which improves the Dolphins poor group of wideouts. And Henne has a top-shelf NFL arm, for sure. The Wildcat will still be a major part of the offense, and is used in high-leverage situations near the goal line. Don’t discount the return of Chad Pennington, either.
Henne is being groomed to be the quarterback of the future for the Dolphins. The question is, when does that future begin? If the Dolphins get off to a slow start, Henne could be inserted as soon as this season, if not, he is almost assured of starting the 2010 season. Chad Pennington is a free agent after the 2009 season, and has already been informed the Dolphins won't offer him a contract as the starting Quarterback but would like to have him return as the backup.
Henne will likely open the season as Miami's third-string quarterback behind Josh McCown and John Beck. Still, he could see some playinig time at some point, as McCown is shaky and Beck is unproven and it will be tough for any of them to succeed given the Dolphins' relatively weak offensive attack.
