ANALYSIS
Grimes continues to test the waters of free agency after three seasons in Tampa Bay. The 35-year-old made 48 tackles, one forced fumble and six defended passes across 13 games in 2018, failing to record an interception for the first time since 2012, when he played in only one game. Though the four-time Pro Bowler intends to suit up for a 13th NFL season, it remains to be seen whether any teams are interested in bringing him in as a starter.

As one might expect with a risk-taking, undersized corner, it isn't always pretty with Grimes. However, he remains admirably consistent year-to-year, as he once again demonstrated in 2017. The 35-year-old turned in a solid 49 tackles (44 solo), 11 passes defensed and three interceptions, numbers reasonably in line with those of his two prior Bucs seasons. While he couldn't secure another long-term contract with Tampa this offseason, he returns on a one-year, $10 million deal that could serve as motivation to prove he deserves one final multi-season pact. Grimes and his fellow secondary mates could certainly benefit from this offseason's influx of pass-rush talent, as added duress in the pocket naturally tends to goad quarterbacks into more mistakes.
The veteran corner enjoyed a statistically successful first season in a Bucs uniform, racking up 57 tackles (51 solo), four interceptions (including one pick-six), a forced fumble and 24 passes defensed in 16 games. Grimes largely served as a stabilizing presence alongside rookie first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves and even set a career high for passes defensed. However, like the rest of a Bucs secondary that gave up the fourth-highest YPA (7.7) and eighth-highest passing yards per game (251), he endured his share of struggles. His starting job remains secure going into 2017, rendering him one of the more valuable IDP options at the cornerback position.
Fresh off a three-season stint with the Dolphins, Grimes joins a Bucs secondary that was guilty of surrendering the league's highest completion rate to opposing quarterbacks in 2015 (70 percent), along with the fifth-most passing touchdowns (31). The 32-year-old recorded 49 tackles and four interceptions in his final South Florida season, and is abundantly familiar with the scheme installed by new defensive coordinator Mike Smith from their time together in Atlanta from 2008-2012. Grimes tallied 13 interceptions and 56 passes defensed over that span, and a resurgent IDP campaign spurred by his re-immersion into Smith's aggressive defense is a strong possibility.
Grimes will enter the season as the Dolphins number one cornerback. While it's true that he lacks ideal size for the position, no one can ever question his heart. He's not afraid to go up for a ball against the big receivers and has been known to make a highlight play or two. His name may not come up much when mentioned among other corners, but he can play with almost anyone.
Grimes proved last season that he was completely recovered from his Achilles' tear and back to being the Dolphins' version of a shutdown corner, notching 60 tackles and four picks in the process.
Grimes is rehabbing a torn Achilles' tendon that he suffered at the beginning of last season. He is expected to be ready to start at cornerback by Week 1, though there could be complications given the serious nature of his injury. If Grimes is healthy, he is a nice addition to the Dolphins' secondary.
Grimes had a somewhat down season last year, only notching 49 tackles and one interception after tallying at least five interceptions each of the last two season. He'll start opposite Dunta Robinson at cornerback in 2012. Expect his numbers to bounce back this season. Look for him to have around 60 total tackles and two or three interceptions.
Grimes falls short of shutdown corner status, but he deserves credit for making as many big plays as he does, even if he gives up a few now and then. After totaling 87 tackles (76 solo) and five interceptions last year (as well as 23 passes defensed), Grimes found himself in the Pro Bowl. It doesn't appear to be a fluke, either – Grimes posted 66 tackles (62 solo) and six interceptions in 2009. With his knack for finding the football, Grimes should remain a nice IDP option in 2011.
Grimes led the Falcons with six interceptions in 2009, but will be the nickel back with Brian Williams returning to the lineup.
Grimes appeared to reclaim the starting left cornerback job by default after Domonique Foxworth signed elsewhere, but Von Hutchins, who went on the IR just one week into training camp last season, is chomping at the bit. Grimes has his work cut out for him after a mostly unimpressive 2008 campaign that saw him lose the starting job to Foxworth in mid-season.
A good training camp performance from Grimes could earn him the starting left cornerback spot--the spot once held by Deangelo Hall.
