Grupe is small even by kicker standards, listed at 5-7, 156. That didn't stop him from catching on with the Saints as an undrafted rookie last year, nor did it stop him from making six of nine kicks from 50-plus yards. He also made each of his 40 PATs, though shorter field goals were a problem area with Grupe missing two of 12 tries inside 30 yards. He tied for eighth among kickers in fantasy scoring and figures to remain the Saints' starter in 2024, with potential benefits including home games played in a dome and a head coach (Dennis Allen) who routinely ranks among the least aggressive in going for it on fourth down. Grupe failed to convert two field-goal tries of 50-plus yards, first missing wide left on a 53-yarder in the first quarter. He then had a 60-yard attempt blocked as time expired at the end of the first half. The second-year kicker has been steady this season, and he'd previously done well from long distance, going a perfect 5-for-5 on tries of 50-plus over the first 12 games. However, Grupe's struggled as of late with three missed field-goal tries over the last two weeks. He'll look to bounce back next week versus Washington on Sunday, Dec. 15.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Grupe was a longshot to make the roster when he signed with the Saints as an undrafted rookie free agent this spring, but he impressed the team throughout training camp and they ended up trading Wil Lutz to the Broncos. That leaves Grupe as the Saints' kicker entering Week 1, benefiting from home games played in a dome as well as a favorable NFC South schedule.

Grupe has been the presumed favorite to remain the Saints' kicker in 2024 after making 30 of 37 field-goal attempts as a rookie in 2023, but Smyth is apparently hanging around in the competition. Grupe has connected on all three of his field-goal attempts in preseason, but Smyth kicked the game-winning field goal against the Cardinals in the preseason opener and turned heads by hitting a 65-yard field goal in practice Tuesday.
