Okafor re-signed with the Chiefs in late July and figures to retain a sizeable role along the defensive line in 2021. He finished last season with16 tackles (nine solo) and three sacks while seeing his playing time increase down the stretch.
When healthy, Okafor appeared to take a step forward in 2019, racking up 5.0 sacks and 22 tackles (15.0 solo) over 10 games prior to a torn pectoral muscle ending his season prematurely. It certainly helps to have Chris Jones and Frank Clark flanking him along the Chiefs' defensive front, which should free him up from double teams to make more plays. Okafor may be counted on for more this season with Terrell Suggs out of the picture, though Tanoh Kpassagnon also figures to be in the mix to rotate in.
After signing a one-year deal with New Orleans last offseason, Okafor put together an excellent 2017 campaign in which he amassed a career-high 43 tackles to go along with 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 10 games. Okafor's season ended prematurely, however, when he tore an Achilles in Week 11. The Saints traded up to draft defensive end Marcus Davenport in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but early training-camp reports indicate that Okafor remains firmly ahead of the raw rookie on the depth chart. Assuming he earns the lion's share of the snaps opposite All Pro Cameron Jordan, Okafor is a high-upside option in deeper IDP leagues.
The Saints signed Okafor this offseason after he spent the last four seasons in Arizona, where he played outside linebacker in the Cardinals' 3-4 scheme. The 26-year-old has showed flashes of dynamic ability when healthy, recording eight sacks in 2014, but managed just 13 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2016. The Saints have struggled for years to find a serviceable starter at defensive end opposite Pro Bowler Cameron Jordan, but the team seems content allowing the unproven Okafor to compete for a starting gig with third-year pro Hau'oli Kikaha, who missed all of last season with an ACL injury, and third-round draft pick Trey Hendrickson. If Okafor can earn the starting job, he may be worth a flier in deeper IDP leagues.
As a rookie in 2013, Okafor suffered a season-ending torn biceps in Week 3, and his recovery extended through the same point last season. In his third career appearance in Week 6 against Washington, he took advantage of a lacking situation at outside linebacker, recording four solo tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits. As losses began to mount in the final two months, he put together the best stretch of his brief career, with six sacks from Weeks 10-16. Considering he logged 66 percent of the defensive snaps by season's end, he seems poised to emerge as a formidable pass rusher.
During John Abraham's absence from the first half of the preseason, Okafor logged time as the starting weakside linebacker, which could extend into the regular season if Abraham is suspended for a June DUI arrest. Okafor himself has made just one appearance as a professional after sustaining a torn biceps in Week 3 last year, but during his final two collegiate campaigns at Texas, he displayed superior pass-rushing skills, totaling 19.5 sacks across 24 games.
