The 49ers signed Amos to the practice squad Tuesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Amos played in 16 regular-season games between the Texans and Jets in 2023, and finished with 28 tackles (23 solo) and one pass defended. He signed with the Jaguars in early August, but he was unsuccessful in making the 53-man roster at the end of training camp. Amos will provide much-needed depth for the 49ers, as George Odum and Ji'Ayir Brown are the only healthy safeties on the active roster.

The Jets promptly added Amos after Chuck Clark suffered a season-ending ACL tear during the team's offseason program. Amos should slide into the starting free safety role in New York after notching at least 83 tackles in each of the previous four seasons with the Packers. He set a career high with 102 tackles in 2022.
For the third time since joining the Packers, Amos started every game and played nearly every defensive snap in 2021. The extra game didn't hurt, but Amos finished the season with 93 tackles - the best mark of his career. He picked off two passes for the fourth year in a row, but he's never topped that mark in seven seasons. The durability makes Amos a trusty option in leagues using individual defensive players, but don't expect much outside the tackle column.
Amos' numbers last year essentially matched what he put up in 2019, but they don't reflect his strong finish to the season, as he racked up 48 tackles, a sack, two interceptions and eight pass defenses between Weeks 10 and 17. When it was all said and done, he wound up being the Packers' leading tackler with 83 stops over the course of the campaign. Amos rarely leaves the field, and if he continues making plays like he did late in 2020, he could be a sneaky option in leagues that utilize IDPs.
Amos isn't a flashy safety, but the Packers weren't looking for that when they signed him to a multi-year deal last offseason. What he is is dependable, and he was just that in his first year in Green Bay, starting all 16 games while taking the field for all but four snaps. He recorded a career-high 84 stops and picked off two passes for the second year in a row. Amos' fantasy utility takes a hit because his numbers don't rival those of some of his counterparts, but his presence does make his unit more effective on the whole.
After four seasons with the Bears, Amos signed a multi-year deal with the division rival Packers during the offseason. Amos started every game last season and set career highs in all of tackles, interceptions, and deflections. Those numbers did not do much for fantasy players, but Amos' steady play did allow fellow safety Eddie Jackson to thrive and make plays at will. The Packers drafted a similar playmaking safety in Darnell Savage, who alongside Amos, could be someone for fantasy players to keep an eye on right away.
During his three years in the league, Amos has been a steady, but unspectacular, IDP at the safety position. He's posted consistent tackle totals of 67, 65 and 69. The last number, from 2017, is misleading because he was a backup who saw limited duty during the first three games of the campaign while also missing three other contests, but he nonetheless showed the ability to be a playmaker. Not only did he return an interception for a touchdown, but he also forced a pair of fumbles, one of which he recovered. Those looking simply at his output may fail to realize that he showed a clear jump in production last year and could be a steal this season should he pick up where he left off.
Entering his third campaign, Amos will remain the the Bears' starting free safety after compiling 67 and 65 tackles during the first two years of his career. However, his play-making ability leaves something to be desired, as he's mustered just one sack and one forced fumble in 31 games. He'll need to step up in that realm in order to be considered for IDP purposes.
One of the most pleasant surprises for the Bears in 2015 is when fifth-round draft choice, Amos, started all 16 games and led the team with 108 tackles while also playing more defensive snaps than any of his teammates. With the team adding talent to their front-seven, he may see a dip in his tackle numbers, but he should find himself in better position to help out in pass coverage and improve upon the four pass break-ups he had as a rookie. If he can improve upon his playmaking, he’ll earn a serious look as an IDP option.
Amos primarily played cornerback during his college career at Penn State, but the Bears are opting to develop him as a free safety after drafting him in the fifth round of the draft this past spring. Becoming a more adept tackler remains the top priority for Amos, but the coaching staff came away impressed with his natural instincts and ability in coverage, an area the team’s safeties have struggled mightily the past couple of seasons. There’s a chance Amos could become a long-term fixture in the Bears’ secondary, but as a rookie, he’ll likely serve as the team’s fourth safety behind Antrel Rolle, Ryan Mundy, and Brock Vereen.

SNew York Jets
June 22, 2023
Amos, who signed with the Jets on June 13, is slated to start at safety in 2023 following confirmation that Chuck Clark will miss the season with a torn ACL, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Jets quickly pounced on Amos once Clark suffered what was feared to be a potential season-ending knee injury during an OTA practice session earlier in June. An ACL tear was confirmed Thursday, meaning Amos, who hasn't missed a regular-season game since 2017 and is coming off a career-best 102-tackle season in 2022 with the Packers, will likely slide into an expanded role alongside holdover Jordan Whitehead.
