ANALYSIS
Even with Jordan Howard (knee) a bit banged up, Davis is a long shot to crack the 53-man roster in Chicago. He was released by the Steelers at the end of the preseason last year and never caught on with another team. Best known for running a 4.37 40-yard dash at 227 pounds back in 2013, the 26-year-old will need to make a strong impression on special teams to have any shot at sticking around.

Davis was once an intriguing prospect due to the combination of his 4.37 wheels and 227-pound frame, but he hasn't averaged over 3.5 yards per carry across any of his four seasons in the league. Third-round rookie James Conner is the favorite to seize the vacant backup running back job behind Le'Veon Bell that formerly belonged to DeAngelo Williams, putting Davis in a position to contend with Fitzgerald Toussaint for the No. 3 role ahead of Week 1.
Davis enters his contract season in worse position than most expected. After a couple effective seasons in the backup role to Jamaal Charles, the 24-year-old was expected to take the bulk of the workload after Charles suffered a torn ACL, but the result was far from anticipatory. Instead, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware took the top two spots on the depth chart, leaving Davis with kickoff return duties and little else (28 carries for 72 yards a touchdown on the season). With the trio of aforementioned backs in front of him, there's been talk of the 2013 third-round pick being moved, as it's unlikely he would have a large offensive role in Kansas City.
Davis got a chance to shine early last season when Jamaal Charles was banged up, but by the second half of the season he was back to seeing limited touches. A solid 5-10, 227, Davis possesses outstanding speed in the open field, using a strong burst and his physical strength to run through arm tackles or simply beat defenders who take poor angles. He isn't particularly elusive and his balance can be a liability in traffic, but Davis' trust in his raw athleticism to get around or even over trash in his path can result in both big gains and disappointingly short ones. Davis has yet to miss a game since joining the Chiefs as a 2013 third-round pick, and he worked last season to improve both his blocking and receiving skills. If Davis earns the coaching staff's trust as a three-down option, he could see significant touches even if Charles stays on the field.
The superbly speedy and powerfully built Davis had a quiet rookie season as Jamaal Charles' backup, averaging only 3.5 YPC, but saw inconsistent reps with Charles staying healthy all year. As long as that remains the case this season, he'll again be limited to under 100 carries. But, if Charles goes down for any reason, Davis's value will skyrocket, as he's a multitalented and explosive back who's built to make big plays. To get any reasonable chance to do so, however, Davis will have to make sure he holds onto the ball. He fumbled three times last year on just 81 touches. Despite the drawbacks, he's one of the highest-upside backups in the league and a must-own handcuff.
A remarkable size-speed specimen, the 6-0, 230-pound Davis ran a 4.37 40 and did 31 bench press reps at this year's Combine. The Chiefs drafted him in the third round in hopes of landing the one-cut-and-explode runner who was once a college phenom, not the injured back who lost 2011 to an ankle injury that continued to make him ineffective last year. Although durability and a history of fumbling are concerns, Davis' physical gifts and potential are undeniable, making him an intriguing insurance policy for Jamaal Charles.
