Rest-of-Season Projections
Lattimore (knee) has informed the 49ers that he plans to retire, the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Serious knee issues derailed the 2013 fourth-rounder's career, with Lattimore relaying in a statement Wednesday that getting his knee "fully back to the level the NFL demands has proven to be insurmountable," the San Jose Mercury News reports. With Lattimore no longer a candidate to join the 49ers' backfield, Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde remain the team's top two options at the running back position.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
An elite talent at running back, Lattimore fell to the fourth round of the 2013 draft thanks to knee injuries that limited him to just 16 total games in his sophomore and junior years at the University of South Carolina. Despite the injuries, he scored 38 touchdowns in his college career while looking like a legitimate first-round prospect and a well-rounded back. After sitting out all of last year due to his knee, Lattimore's fully healthy and ready to go this season. While the Niners have a crowded depth chart behind aging starter Frank Gore -- Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James and new draftee Carlos Hyde will all fight for the right to tote the ball -- Lattimore has all the skills to float to the top.
