Hanna was placed on the Cowboys' reserved/retired list Friday due to lingering knee injuries, Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Hanna signed a three-year deal with the Cowboys back in 2016, and the tight end went on to miss all of that next season after undergoing knee surgery. The lingering problems from that injury are now cutting Hanna's career short. Hanna appeared in all 16 games for Dallas last season and started in eight, but he caught just four passes for 88 yards. Jason Witten will obviously continue to operate as the team's starting tight end, but there are now serious questions as to who will be backing him up.

Being the primary backup to the ageless Jason Witten is a pretty thankless job, but Hanna handled his limited role in Dallas well over four seasons before a knee injury that required two surgeries cost him all of 2016. When healthy, the 28-year-old has good hands and speed and has turned himself into an adept blocker, allowing him to see snaps in all situations when Witten needs a rare breather. Assuming he proves he's 100 percent in camp, Hanna should resume his No. 2 spot on the depth chart, although he may need to peek over his shoulder at athletic phenom Rico Gathers.
Despite profiling as a potential H-back when he came out of Oklahoma, Hanna turned himself into a solid blocking tight end and special teams player over the first four years of his NFL career and was rewarded for it with a three-year deal in the offseason. A knee injury has delayed his start to camp, but once he returns to the field he should resume his role as an infrequently-targeted depth option behind Jason Witten.
Hanna has emerged as a reliable blocker, but caught just four passes in 16 games last season for the Cowboys and doesn't figure to see a greatly expanded offensive role in 2015
The tight end hasn't been able to carve out much of a role for himself in the Cowboys' passing game in two seasons, and further development from Gavin Escobar could make Hanna expendable.
The athletic tight end carved out a small role in the offense late in his rookie season, and the Cowboys' switch to more two-tight end sets could allow Hanna to have some fantasy value in deep leagues. He'll be competing with second round pick Gavin Escobar for snaps though, so don't expect too much.
Sixth round pick has a chance to make a small impact on passing downs given the Cowboys' lack of depth at TE behind Jason Witten.
