Released by Lions
The Lions released Jones on Tuesday in order for the wide receiver to attend to a family matter, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones didn't travel with the Lions for their Week 7 matchup with the Ravens for personal reasons. He then announced on Instagram on Tuesday that he's "stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters," per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network. It's unclear if Jones will be available at any point for the remainder of the campaign, but if not, he'll end his second stint in Detroit with five catches (on 10 targets) for 35 yards and no touchdowns.

Jones is back in Detroit for his age-33 season after a two-year detour to Jacksonville, where he finished fourth on the team in targets (81) last season while playing 16 games. He managed only 6.9 and 6.5 YPT in his two seasons with the Jags, following five consecutive years of 8.2 or higher with the Lions. It's concerning that he didn't improve in his second year with the Jaguars even after QB Trevor Lawrence improved, and it could be that Jones is simply over the hill. He's now on a one-year, $3 million contract, but his chances at a lot of playing time improved when the NFL announced a six-game suspension for 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams. The Lions will need some combo of Jones, Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond to step up early in the season, assuming they want to keep Amon-Ra St. Brown in the slot most of the time.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Chance for enhanced role
Jones is likely to see an enhanced role over the first six games of the regular season in the wake of Jameson Williams' six-game suspension for violation of the NFL's gambling policy, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams' ban was announced Friday along with an indefinite suspension for another Lions downfield threat, Quintez Cephus, who was immediately released by the team. The instant subtraction of two speed wideouts should equate to more downfield target opportunities for Jones, who re-signed with the team earlier in the offseason after spending the last two years in Jacksonville and has recorded 50 receptions of 20-plus yards in the last four seasons.
