The Cardinals waived Brown on Wednesday, Scott Bordow of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Brown will now seek his third team of the year, as he played six games with the Eagles before being cut and signing with the Cardinals, where he was a healthy scratch in every contest. The 2012 second-round pick nearly recorded his third consecutive 100-tackle campaign when he posted 96 stops for the Redskins last year, so he could play a role wherever he lands.

After middle linebacker Jordan Hicks walked in free agency, the Eagles didn't address the position in the draft and shortly thereafter signed Brown to a modest one-year contract. Brown brings experience from three previous stops, but health concerns have slowed him at times as a pro, resulting in 18 DNPs across seven seasons. In Philadelphia, he won't have much competition for a leading role, with L.J. Fort and Paul Worrilow the primary challengers. Overall, Brown has averaged 6.7 tackles per game while adding 17.5 sacks, seven interceptions, six forced fumbles and two defensive TDs in 94 appearances. As the upcoming campaign approaches, the primary question mark surrounding Brown is the torn oblique he gutted through last season. If 100 percent, he'll have as good of a chance as any Eagles IDP to remain relevant from week to week.
Brown's place among the top-ranked linebackers is an implausible outcome given that he was basically unwanted two years ago, but it's time to reckon with the fact he's a blue-chip IDP at this point, retread or not. Over the last two years, Brown shed the effort and instincts limitations that dogged him early in his career, allowing his rare athletic talent to finally shine through. His elite athleticism has helped him pile up huge tackle total, and that athleticism makes him a standout sack and interception threat, as well.
A 2012 second-round pick, Brown was considered a bust prior to last year, but an age-26 breakout after leaving Tennessee for Buffalo rehabilitated his stock. Always an incredible athlete, Brown's instincts often failed him in the past, keeping him on the bench despite enticing per-snap statistical volume. With a career-high 980 snaps last year, Brown's stats exploded as he finally hit his potential. Now with the Redskins, even if his real-life play falters, Washington likely lacks the alternatives to consider benching him. The stats should stay.
Brown’s fortunes took a turn for the better when the Bills’ 2016 second-round draft pick, Reggie Ragland, went down with a torn ACL early in training camp. Brown will likely be the main beneficiary of Ragland’s absence, and he is slated to assume the starting inside linebacker position alongside Preston Brown in Buffalo’s 3-4 scheme. The fifth-year man should see his snaps skyrocket, but there is no knowing for sure how much that will translate into fantasy production.
Brown is a slight injury worry after suffering a torn pectoral muscle Week 1 last year, but his IDP upside is among the best when he's healthy. Brown runs a 4.4 40 at 245 pounds, giving him major playmaking upside both as a pass rusher and in coverage. Despite playing less than 750 snaps both years, Brown averaged 92 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions in his first two years, and he scored two defensive touchdowns, as well. He needs to earn a three-down role in a fairly crowded linebacker group to ensure maximum snaps, however.
Consistency has been an issue with Brown going back to his days at North Carolina, so it wasn't shocking to see him follow up his exciting rookie season with uneven play in 2013. Blessed with 4.4 speed at around 245 pounds, Brown has shown the ability to make a huge impact in both coverage and the pass rush. He has 9.5 sacks in his first two seasons, along with four interceptions and two touchdowns, so his ceiling is rather high. Unfortunately, he'll remain a boom-or-bust pick in 2014 since his exact role in Tennessee's 3-4 defense is unclear. The Titans have all of Brown, Akeem Ayers, Wesley Woodyard and Zaviar Gooden as potential inside linebacker starters.
It would seem at a glance as if Tennessee is crowded at linebacker, but a closer look hints at a big role for Brown in 2013 nonetheless. Akeem Ayers plays a limited snap count and splits his time between linebacker and defensive end, Colin McCarthy has a long history of injury troubles (12 games missed the last two years) and third-round pick Zaviar Gooden is a speedy linebacker whose skill set is redundant to Brown's. The Titans are in any case compelled to give Brown more work in 2013 after he posted 92 tackles, 5.5 sacks and three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) in just 739 defensive snaps as a rookie.

Comments lead to release?

Brown, who was released by the Eagles on Monday, may have partly prompted that decision with his critical comments about Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins ahead of Sunday's Week 6 loss to Minnesota, Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Providing the opposition with extra motivation through a little trash talk certainly isn't the most common reason for getting released in the NFL, but it may have had at least a part to play in Brown's case. After all, the veteran linebacker had 31 tackles, including two for loss, and two defensed passes through Philadelphia's first six games and was a cost-effective addition on a one-year, $3 million contract this offseason. Brown had logged over 50 snaps in four of his six contests as well, so the team clearly had a certain level of trust in him as recently as Sunday. However, with Cousins throwing for four touchdowns against the Eagles after Brown, his former teammate with the Redskins, had criticized him as a weak link of Minnesota's offense, the team may have been prompted to move on.
