May 11, 2016
Lockette (neck) has announced his retirement from the NFL.
ANALYSIS
In Week 8 of last season, Lockette sustained a serious neck injury on an illegal hit while fielding a punt against the Cowboys. Season-ending surgery was quickly ordered up, and he spent the next week-plus in a Dallas hospital before returning to Seattle. Although he didn't exactly develop into a regular receiving threat in parts of four seasons with the Seahawks -- 22 receptions for 451 yards and four touchdowns in 34 career games -- he boasts a Super Bowl ring from the 2013 campaign.

Lockette is a speed demon occasionally used on go routes but mainly as a gunner on special teams. He had a chance last year to be the downfield threat after Percy Harvin was jettisoned, but the Seahawks didn't often use him that way. He's bound for a similar role this season, with the wide receiver landscape in Seattle remaining similar to 2014.
Lockette was mostly a special teams player last season, but he will have to earn one of the last WR jobs this season. Sidney Rice's retirement an injury to rookie Kevin Norwood greatly improved his chances. CFL project Chris Matthews will be given a long look because of his 6-5 height, and former practice-squad player Phil Bates is in the mix too. Lockette, though, is a valued special teams player, which gives him an edge.
Lockette will compete for a reserve receiver role on the 53-man roster but is expected to be signed to the practice squad for another season.
