Transitions to CFL
WRFree Agent
March 2, 2023
The Toronto Argonauts of the CFL signed Inman to a one-year contract Thursday, per the team's official site.
ANALYSIS
Inman is now slated to reunite with his former CFL squad after having been away from Toronto over the last 10 years. The 34-year-old wide receiver last played for the Washington Football Team back in 2020, but he's opted to pursue another playing opportunity where he'll likely command a depth role given his advancing age and lengthy layoff from competitive football.

Inman made a splash with the Chargers back in 2016, catching 58 passes for 810 yards and four touchdowns after a Week 1 injury to Keenan Allen opened up a key role in the offense. His contributions have been less consistent since that mini breakout, with 2019 seeing Inman catch only 12 passes in seven games with the Chargers and Colts. The 31-year-old does have a decent opportunity ahead in Washington, where there's open competition for receiver jobs after No. 1 target Terry McLaurin. It looks like Inman has a real shot at a starting job, competing against Steven Sims, Antonio Gandy-Golden and a slew of undrafted youngsters.
Inman, who hauled in 28 catches for 304 yards and three TDs in nine games for the Colts last season, was let go by the Patriots in August. He quickly signed a new contract with the Chargers, the team he first made his name with. Inman now figures to battle for the fourth or fifth wideout spot in Los Angeles.
Inman began the 2017 season with the Chargers but ended it with the Bears after being traded midseason. The change of scenery led to increased production for the receiver, as Inman went from not having a clear role in Los Angeles to averaging a career-high 14.5 yards per catch with Chicago. This didn't come out of nowhere, however, as Inman was similarly efficient in 2016 with the Chargers when he caught 56 passes for 810 yards (14.0 YPC) and four scores. With known visits to both Dallas and Indianapolis this offseason, it's somewhat surprising the 29-year-old remains a free agent at press time, though there remains plenty of time for him to land another contract in advance of Week 1.
Inman has had an increased role on offense each of his first three seasons with the Chargers, with the biggest leap coming last season, as he recorded a career-high 58 receptions for 810 yards and four touchdowns. However, 2017 will be Inman's biggest challenge yet, as the 28-year-old underwent core muscle surgery in the offseason. He'll face competition from rookie Mike Williams, who is expected to leapfrog Inman on the depth chart, thus leaving the veteran in the No. 5 spot. Williams is tending to a back injury, though, which could delay Inman's likely fall down the depth chart.
Pressed into action after injuries plagued the Chargers' wide receiving corps, Inman responded well, tallying 35 catches for 486 yards and three touchdowns. However, with starting wideouts Keenan Allen (spleen) and Stevie Johnson (groin) healthy and free-agent addition Travis Benjamin likely manning the slot, Inman's path to the field seems clogged. Much like his previous two seasons, Inman's playing time this season will likely depend on the health of the people above him on the depth chart.
Inman was pressed into service for the final two games of the 2014 season when Keenan Allen went down with a broken collarbone, and he responded with 12 receptions and 158 yards in those two games. With a crowded group of receivers ahead of him on the depth chart, it will be tough for him to get many looks this season unless a few guys get injured, but he proved that he can be productive when needed and actually showed tremendous hands and athleticism during his limited window of opportunity.
Inman will have a hard time making the final roster in San Diego.

Inman (quadriceps) worked out for the Colts on Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The fact the veteran wideout got a look speaks to concerns about T.Y. Hilton's (calf) status, which remains decidedly murky for the time being. Inman played nine games for Indianapolis last season and generated a solid 28-304-3 line, and while he doesn't bring Hilton's speed, the veteran is a trusted route runner that could help bring some stability to what is presently an inconsistent receiving corps headlined by Zach Pascal.
