Atlanta dropped from 13th in sacks during 2017 to 22nd last season, partially attributable to Clayborn's departure to New England. Clayborn led that 2017 Falcons squad with 9.5 sacks, as the team made its second consecutive playoff appearance (only NFC team to do that between 2016 and 2017). Clayborn may be on the back end of his career entering his age-31 season, but he can still be a valuable second-team defensive end opposite rookie John Cominsky. Clayborn only fielded 26.2 percent of the defensive snaps during his one-year stint with New England, but is likely to participate in a more integral role for the Falcons this season.
The imposing defensive lineman is coming off a season in which he led the Falcons with 9.5 sacks, surpassing his previous career-best of 7.5 sacks from his rookie campaign. New England hopes that Clayborn can help set the edge in run support as well, with their defense having surrendered over 4.6 yards per carry last season.
Clayborn will complete with Brooks Reed for the right to start at defensive end. Clayborn enters the preseason with a clean bill of health after undergoing surgery to address a torn biceps that he suffered during the postseason. He’ll give Brooks Reed a run for his money during camp, and whoever wins the starting role should see a number of pass rush opportunities.
Clayborn is expected to start opposite Kroy Biermann at defensive end in his first year with the Falcons. Clayborn only played one game last season after suffering a biceps injury, but he had a solid 2013 campaign where he tallied 64 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Biermann put up similar numbers for the Falcons last season, so if Clayborn can stay healthy, he should have upwards of 50-70 tackles and similar sack numbers.
With the free-agent signing of veteran RDE Michael Johnson from Cincinnati, Clayborn is expected to shift to the left side after being the starter at RDE the previous three seasons. Clayborn just hasn't quite produced at the level expected of a 1st round pick defensive end in his career so far. To that end the Bucs decided not to pick up the $6.969 million, fifth-year option on Clayborn's rookie contract this offseason. The Bucs' want to see more than 64 tackles (43 solo) and 5.5 sacks in 2014 before committing beyond next season.
Clayborn starts at defensive end for the Buccaneers in their 4-3 defensive scheme.
Clayborn was going to see a high snap count in Tampa Bay either way, but the news of a likely season-ending Achilles' tendon tear for 2011 second-round pick Da'Quan Bowers means Clayborn will see even more of the field in 2012. The Iowa product and 2011 first-round pick was far from dominant but still promising as a rookie, finishing with 42 tackles (29 solo), 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. He should benefit both from his own improvement and the availability of defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (biceps), who missed 10 games last year.
The 20th overall pick in the 2011 draft, Clayborn is expected to plug into a starting role for Tampa Bay immediately this season. With Gerald McCoy, Brian Price and Roy Miller on the interior, Clayborn should get favorable matchups on the outside. The former Iowa star had a down year in 2010, but he has the explosiveness and the motor to be a great fit for the Tampa defense. As a rookie he comes with risk, of course, but his upside is tremendous.
