Mike Alstott: Officially Retires
FBFree Agent
January 24, 2008
Alstott officially announced his retirement on Thursday, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll retire as the Bucs' franchise leader in touchdowns, while being remembered as both a good blocker and a capable rushing threat during the Bucs' rise from the league basement in the late 1990s. Alstott figures to get serious consideration for the Hall of Fame once he's eligible to be elected in five years.

Placed on injured reserve in August; he'll miss the entire 2007 season and is expected to retire afterwards.
No, he didn't retire after all; he'll come back as the Bucs' starting fullback, and he's the leading candidate for touches in short-yardage and goal-line situations.
Alstott has all but confirmed that he'll retire after the 2005 season. The Bucs will keep him around for his farewell tour, and he'll see touches in short-yardage and goal-line situations, but he won't have much fantasy impact otherwise.
If he's healthy, Alsott will likely start training camp as the Bucs' fullback, which means that he'll have a good chance of scoring double-digit touchdowns this season, based on his usage in goalline offenses.
Led the Bucs in TDs in 2002 with seven (five rushing, two receiving). Second on the team in carries (146 for 548 yards, 3.8 ypa) and fifth in receptions (35 for 242 yards, 6.9 ypc). Expect more of the same in 2003. He likely won't be the team's feature back, but he will see most of the carries in short yardage and red-zone situations, and he'll be part of the pass offense as well.
