LaRod Stephens-Howling

Stephens-Howling may see a few carries, but his most significant contribution will be as a return man for the Steelers.

Stephens-Howling enters 2012 as the Cards' third-down back, but could become much more if Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams recover slowly from their respective knee injuries. Stephens-Howling hasn't proven to be one who can carry the load, but can provide big-play spark. He is a much better receiver than a rusher, averaging 18.0 yards per reception last year, as opposed to 3.9 yards per carry. He did see 21 carries for 93 yards in the 2011 season finale, but we wouldn't look for that to be replicated in 2012.

Even after they sent Tim Hightower to Washington in a trade, the Cards will boast a deep group at the running back position in 2011. With Beanie Wells, rookie Ryan Williams, and Stephens-Howling all vying for playing time, it's challenging to imagine any one back carving out a significant piece of the ball-handling pie, at least early in the season. Stephens-Howling mustered 23 carries for 113 yards and one score in 2010 and with the addition of Williams, his numbers aren't likely to go up. Stephens-Howling is perhaps the least fantasy-worthy back on the Cards' roster.

Chris Wells and Tim Hightower handled almost all of Arizona's rushing duties in 2009, which left only sporadic offensive touches and a variety of special teams duties for Stephens-Howling. He served as Arizona's primary kickoff returner and, while he averaged a pedestrian 24 yards per return, he showed flashes of brilliance thanks to his exceptional speed. Stephens-Howling was adept in punt and kickoff coverage and he could grow into a larger role in future seasons. As long as Wells and Hightower are healthy, his chances to take snaps on offense will be limited.

Stephens-Howling is a speedy rookie that the Cardinals selected in the seventh round of April’s draft. His best chance to make an impact in 2009 is as a kickoff returner. Stephens-Howling will compete with several players during training camp for those duties.
