Arrington (concussion) was released Monday by the Ravens, Garrett Downing of BaltimoreRavens.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Ravens made a handful of changes to their secondary on Monday, releasing Arrington in order to sign Brandon Boykin and Al-Hajj Shabazz. All this comes in the wake of Tavon Young's ACL tear, which will sideline the nickel back for the entire 2017 season. Arrington's release seemed inevitable, as the team freed up $2.1 million with his departure. After missing all of last season due to concussions, Arrington will now look to compete for a reserve spot elsewhere if he can remain on the field.

After spending the first five seasons of his career with the Patriots, Arrington signed a three-year, $7 million contract with the Ravens this offseason and is expected to serve as the team's nickelback in 2015. He had the same role in New England for much of last season, finishing with 39 tackles (33 solo), two forced fumbles, a sack, a fumble recovery and four passes defensed in 14 games.
Projects as the Patriots' top slot cornerback, but out of the gate he'll compete with Alfonzo Dennard and Logan Ryan for the right to start in place of right cornerback Brandon Browner, who must serve a four-game suspension to start the season.
Arrington will likely go into 2013 as New England's primary slot specialist at corner, but overall he's a valuable asset for the team, especially with fellow CB Alfonzo Dennard dealing with some off-field issues. Arrington racked up 74 tackles last season, but his IDP utility took a big hit as he went without a picking after intercepting seven passes in 2011.
Devin McCourty generally gets the most press when it comes to New England's corners, but Arrington was arguably the better player in 2011. He broke out in a big way as an IDP, finishing with 88 tackles (66 solo) while intercepting seven passes and defending 15. He posted those numbers despite starting only 14 games, too. As an almost certain 16-game starter for New England in 2012, Arrington might be able to make a push for 90 tackles, though it is not generally realistic to hope for another seven interceptions.
Will try to stick as a depth guy at cornerback.
