Wright has decided to retire from the NFL, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Wright re-signed with the 49ers on a one-year contract in March after working in a backup capacity last season, amassing seven tackles and an interception in seven games. With the addition of first-round draft pick Jimmie Ward to the secondary, however, Wright might have had a more difficult chance at seeing meaningful snaps as a nickel or dime back, perhaps influencing his decision to call it a career. Wright collected 332 tackles and 15 interceptions during his seven-year career spent with the Browns, Lions, Buccaneers and 49ers.

Wright is a cornerback with an extensive history of giving up catches, which equates to easy tackles for IDP owners. Indeed, in his five-year career Wright has produced at a per-game rate that projects to an average of 69 tackles (62 solo) per season. He has even shown some ability to make plays on the ball, intercepting 13 passes (returning one for a touchdown) and defending 63 passes in his career. Wright should be a solid IDP backup at the least this year, especially in leagues that reward points for passes defended.
He will start at cornerback for the Browns this season, although it is unclear whether or not he will be No. 1 with the addition of Sheldon Brown from Philadelphia. Either way, he should have a better season with a much improved defensive backfield in Cleveland.
Wright is not one of the elite corners in the league, but he makes a fair amount of tackles for his position and has shown promise as a ball-hawk. A reason to be pessimistic about Wright is that the Browns are often playing from behind and having teams opt to use to run more often than the pass. If the Browns' defense proves to be tougher than it was in 2008, he could garnish some IDP value.
Wright had an impressive rookie campaign in 2007 racking up 71 tackles, one sack and an interception despite missing two games. The departure of Leigh Bodden will mean that Wright will be relied on more in his second season. Expect the numbers to improve across the board.
He should have been picked higher than the third round in the draft, but off the field shennanigans proved to be his downfall and the Browns' gain. He can be an impact player and will compete for a starting spot in the Browns' secondary.
