Daniel Fells

Will compete for the starting tight end job after inking a deal with the Giants in January. Fells, who sat out the entirety of the 2013, will be hard-pressed to beat out Adrien Robinson for starting duties.

Fells was unseated on the Patriots' depth chart at tight end by Zach Sudfeld and Michael Hoomanawanui and released in August.

Fells gives the Patriots, a team that deploys the TE heavily, an experienced option at the position. While Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are ahead of him -- and the upside plays in fantasy -- Fells, who had 19 catches for 256 yards with three TDs in 2011 for the Broncos, could merit consideration if either of the aforementioned duo ever goes down with an injury.

Fells started last season No. 3 on the depth chart but took advantage of injuries to his tight-end teammates to increase his role. One of the bigger tight ends at 6-4, 270, Fells has the ability to run through his opponent and break tackles. His size made him a great target for Sam Bradford last season, as he used his big frame to shield defenders while the ball is in the air. However, instead of re-signing with the Rams, Fells heads to Denver, where he will compete with Richard Quinn, Dan Gronkowski, Dante Rosario, Julius Thomas and Virgil Green for reps at the tight end position. Because of the strong competition, Fells is a relatively weak fantasy option this season.

Fells re-signed with the Rams in March and heads to camp with a good shot at earning the starting tight end job. While his numbers — 21 receptions for 273 yards and three touchdowns on 35 targets in 14 games — do not overwhelm, they are more a reflection of St. Louis’ putrid passing game than his pass-catching skills. His fortune could change this season with the No. 1 player in the draft, Sam Bradford, at the helm. If Bradford succeeds, that likely will mean good things for Fells. And if Bradford struggles, well, he’ll probably be looking for his tight end as a dump-off safety valve. Fells will probably not be fantasy relevant this year but should be kept in mind for the future as he and Bradford develop together.

Fells will compete with Billy Bajema for the back-up TE role behind starter Randy McMichael. With the new coaching staff expected to use more multiple tight-end sets the loser of that battle is still likely to end up on the 54 man roster as a primary back-up and special teams player.

Fells has seen training camp and practice squad time, but no game action, in three years in the league; he'll try to win a special teams role. Could see action as an H-back if he sticks.

Fells is listed as the team's third tight end for the upcoming season. He was on the roster for the entire 2006 season but was inactive for every contest. He doesn't figure to see much playing time again this season unless he can find a role in new head coach Bobby Petrino's college-style offense.
