Howard was released by the Falcons on Tuesday.

Sean Weatherspoon (foot) was officially activated from the injured reserve/designated-to-return list, and Howard was cut loose to make room on the active roster. Howard posted 99 tackles just two years ago, and could latch on elsewhere as linebacking depth.

Howard’s upside might be a bit limited due to Cincinnati’s ball-control, clock-eating offense, but he’s back on the IDP radar in deeper leagues due to his 99 tackles last year. Although he sat on the bench for Oakland in 2010, Howard is locked in as a starter for Cincinnati and is one of the league’s most athletic linebackers. Although there’s no particular reason to expect him to return to such form, it’s worth noting Howard intercepted six passes (returning two for touchdowns) in 2007. That said, he had no interceptions in his last two years as a starter.

Howard has started all but two games in his four seasons, but he will be a reserve linebacker for the Raiders in 2010. Howard is a better cover man than fellow linebackers Kamerion Wimbley and Trevor Scott, so expect him to see action on passing downs.

Howard is just two seasons removed from picking off six passes and scoring two defensive touchdowns, but his pass defense numbers dropped off significantly last season. Howard's interceptions and passes dropped significantly, but he did rack up 97 tackles. As long as he stays healthy, Howard is a good bet to rack up at least 90 tackles and could really have a good season if he forces a few more turnovers.

Howard's IDP value was increased in 2007 by his six interceptions. Linebackers who put up those kind of interception numbers are rare and Howard should be valued based on this production. Howard continues to grow as a player each year and should only be better next season.

Started 15 games as a rookie last season recording 110 tackles. Should improve in 2007.

Rookie Howard has won the job as the starting weakside linebacker. His combination of power and speed makes him an intruiging rookie and a possible IDP sleeper. It will be interesting to see how the Raiders use him in their new 4-3 base defense.
