Adams announced his retirement from football Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The 38-year-old safety was a 16-game starter as recently as 2018, which capped off a stretch of five consecutive seasons with multiple interceptions and 69 or more tackles. Adams then spent 2019 in a backup role with the Texans, his sixth team in 16 professional seasons. He got the start in 149 of his 228 career regular-season appearances, piling up 935 tackles, 90 pass defenses, 30 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries, 13 forced fumbles and six sacks. Adams had a late peak in 2014 and 2015 for the Colts, picking off five passes and earning a Pro Bowl nod in both seasons.

In Adams' first season with the Panthers, he finished fifth on the team in tackles. Despite being 37 years old, he figures to maintain his starting position this season, offering veteran leadership at the back end of Carolina's defense.
Playing next to Kurt Coleman in Carolina, Adams could see his IDP utility rise considerably after leaving Indianapolis in free agency. Although he's a journeyman type, the Carolina safety role has proven profitable in the past, with the defense's aggressive approach in the front seven creating opportunities for the defenders in the secondary. Although Adams posted just 79 tackles and two interceptions last year, he hovered in the 90-tackle, five-interception range the two years prior. There should be reliable production if he earns a three-down role.
Adams followed up his first ever Pro Bowl season in 2014-15 with another solid campaign, leading the Colts' secondary with 75 tackles, five interceptions, and three forced fumbles to go along with six pass deflections, one sack, and one touchdown in only 13 games. The 35-year-old shows no signs of slowing down in his 13th season and is a solid option for any IDP leagues.
Adams was a ten-year journeymen before signing with the Colts, but took over the starting strong safety role and responded with five interceptions and 87 tackles in 16 games and was named to the Pro Bowl last season. He'll return in the same role for the Colts heading into the upcoming campaign.
Adams is a reserve defensive back who may have a shot at playing time just because the Colts have few experienced players at safety.
Finished second on the team with 80 tackles last season and will be the Broncos' starting strong safety again this season.
Will start at free safety, taking over for the retired Brian Dawkins. He'll have big shoes to fill, although it was never a position that posted high IDP totals.
Will compete with Usama Young for time, but Young appears to be the favorite among the coaching staff.
Not a great IDP candidate as he does not pick up many interceptions and could begin the season coming off the bench. He will see some competition from hard hitting rookies TJ Ward and Larry Asante.
WIll see playing time in 2009, although nothing is guaranteed with the addition of Abram Elam to the roster.
Adams is a depth player that should see very little playing time in 2008.
Adams will compete for a starting position in the Browns' secondary.
Will battle Mark Roman and Chad Williams to be the starting free safety, Is expected to be the backup defensive back, at both safety and cornerback, and be used as the nickel back.
