It’s ironic that the receiver who wrote a book called: Just Give Me the Damn Ball!, has evolved into a quintessential second fiddle – someone who can make catches and keep the chains moving, but who lacks any semblance of game-breaking talent. And that’s exactly the role he was brought in to fill for Carolina, a reliable second target for Jake Delhomme so defenses can’t completely key on Steve Smith. Johnson has good size and strength, he’s experienced enough to find the open spots in zone coverage and he’s not afraid to make tough catches over the middle. But he’s slow for a receiver, and he lacks the quickness to turn short completions into big gains. Johnson was targeted 22 times in the red zone a year ago, catching six for scores, but those six were his only scores because he’s not a threat to score from much farther out.
Johnson isn’t as good as he thinks he is – even Randy Moss and Terrell Owens might have trouble meeting those delusional standards – but he isn’t bad, either, catching 56 percent of his 126 targets and averaging 14 yards per catch last season. Johnson’s slow for a wideout, but at 6-4, 212 pounds, he’s a big target with good hands and the courage to catch passes over the middle. The arrival of strong-armed Drew Bledsoe in Dallas this season should be an improvement over the venerable Vinny Testaverde, and Johnson should see a lot of work in the short and intermediate areas of the field. Despite his size, Johnson’s not much of a red-zone threat, converting just 2 of 12 passes from inside the 20 for scores.
Johnson returns to Bill Parcells, who was able to get some decent TD production from him during their last time together (and before Keyshawn developed his end-zone allergy). If Johnson was half as good as he thinks he is, Gruden would have put up with his distractions. Johnson (31) isn’t that old for a WR, and there’s some chance he recaptures a large measure of his Jets’ glory.
Deactivated for the rest of the 2003 season by Tampa Bay on November 18.
