Clemons has informed the Seahawks that he is planning to retire, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Clemons is retiring after signing a one-year deal with the Seahawks in the spring. The 34-year-old defensive end only recorded 14 combined tackles in 16 games for the Jaguars in 2015, but enjoyed a long and prosperous NFL career, racking up 69 sacks in his 12 seasons. He had arguably the most productive stint in his career in Seattle, where he racked up 38 sacks in four seasons from 2010 to 2013.

In his first season with the Jaguars after coming over from Seattle, Clemons recorded 36 total tackles to go with 8.0 sacks and four forced fumbles. This season, he’ll again play the LEO, pass-rushing specialist role and should see the majority of the snaps at the position, particularly given the season-ending knee injury to rookie Dante Fowler. If Clemons is able to stay healthy, he could be among the more productive sleeper IDPs in 2015.
Clemons had a productive tenure in Seattle, but he'll move his efforts down to Jacksonville for the 2014 season. New teammate Tyson Alualu is going to make the move over to defensive end, which will likely cause Clemons to take a backseat behind the 27-year-old former defensive tackle. Of course, this move stands a good chance of hindering Clemons' first-year totals with the Jaguars.
Although the arrival of 15th overall draft pick Bruce Irvin could threaten Clemons' snap count, expect the Seahawks to get Irvin on the field without it often being at Clemons' expense. To state it more briefly, the Seahawks aren't going to lessen Clemons' play count after he posted 11 sacks in each of the last two seasons. Irvin's arrival will more likely help Clemons by forcing offenses to account for Irvin on the other side, lessening the frequency that Clemons sees chip blocks from running backs and double teams from tight ends. Clemons will get further assistance of that sort from the arrival of the versatile and rangy Jason Jones, who should be a nuisance on the interior for Seattle.
After bouncing around the league as a situational pass rusher for six years, Clemons made the most of his first season in a starting role last year. The 254-pound end specializes as an edge threat in Seattle’s lopsided 4-3, and he has consistently demonstrated an ability to excel in this role throughout his career. His generally one-dimensional game means he won’t pile up too many tackles (he had 49 last year), but he’s a good bet to hit double-digit sacks after totaling 11 last season. Clemons is a bit unproven with just one season as a full-time player, however, so he comes with some risk.
Seattle traded for Clemons this offseason to upgrade its pass rush. Clemons totaled seven sacks combined the last two seasons as a situational pass rusher for Philadelphia. If that counts as an upgrade, then bully for the Seahawks.
Clemons will battle Jerome McDougle for the fifth defensive end spot.
Situational pass rusher.
Clemons will compete for the vacant weak-side linebacker spot left by LaVar Arrington. He is weak against the run but his quickness is a strong asset on passing downs. He will also spend time on special teams.
