The 36-year-old Harvard grad is expected to start at center in 2012.
Birk is expected to start if he's knees can handle the workload. If not, the Ravens will have a difficult time replacing his reliability on the line.
The veteran Birk will once again anchor the center of the offensive line in Baltimore.
Birk, a veteran Pro Bowler, comes from Minnesota to replace Jason Brown at starting center.
The Pro Bowl center will act as the leader of what many consider could best offensive line in the NFL.
Birk will be the starting center for Minnesota. He started all 16 games last year after sitting out 2005 with hip and hernia surgery, and didn't really seem to have any lingering problems. He suffered a slight knee injury but it did not cause him to miss any time. Durability should not be a major concern for Birk this year.
Birk missed all of last season after surgery on his left hip. His return, along with the signing of Steve Hutchinson, could vastly improve the offensive line, which allowed the second most sacks in the NFL last season. Birk is still a major health risk, however, after frequent hip and hernia problems.
