Waived by the Redskins in August of 2013. Stallworth finished the 2012 season with one catch for a 63-yard TD in his only game with the Patriots, but they decided not to bring him back this off-season.
Assuming he makes the team, which is no lock, Stallworth could provide New England with some downfield speed that the team's receivers otherwise lack for the most part. He's unlikely to get enough targets to be a fantasy factor in his second stint with New England, however. Update: Waived by Patriots in August of 2012.
Stallworth's 2010 season was a quiet one. He returned after sitting out a year due to legal troubles. He broke his foot early in the year and recorded two catches for 82 yards. He enters 2011 with the Redskins and an opportunity to compete for a starting job.
Stallworth may be coming off a year-long suspension, but many believe he'll be the Ravens' third receiver behind Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason. The offensive scheme should be less run-heavy now that the Ravens have more weapons on the outside, making Stallworth a potentially decent waiver pickup for bye weeks.
After being handed an indefinite suspension by commissioner Roger Goodell following a conviction for DUI manslaughter, it is hard to imagine Stallworth playing a down in the NFL this season. Even if he does return later on, don't expect much out of him given his woeful 2008 season.
Stallworth was the odd man out in New England last year with the return to health of Randy Moss and the emergence of possession receiver Wes Welker. Stallworth could be in a similar situation in Cleveland with Braylon Edwards playing the role of Moss and tight end Kellen Winslow a far more athletic stand-in for Welker. Despite his limited role, the speedy Stallworth was effective, averaging 15.2 yards per catch and 9.82 yards per target (both numbers virtually identical to Moss').
Coming off the most explosive season of his career – he averaged 19 yards per catch and 9.3 yards per target – Stallworth finds himself in an interesting situation this year, lining up opposite Randy Moss and having Tom Brady as his quarterback. Of course, it’s only interesting if Stallworth stays healthy. After playing 16 games in consecutive seasons, Stallworth’s balky hamstrings acted up again last year, and, along with a hip injury, cost him four games. When healthy, Stallworth, like Moss, has game-breaking speed and rare leaping ability. At 6-0, 200 pounds, he doesn’t have Moss’s size, and he’s not much of a red-zone presence, but he’s explosive and dangerous from further out. His hands and his route running are average at best, but he has excellent body control and can make acrobatic plays on the ball. With the addition of Moss and slot receiver Wes Welker with tight end Ben Watson, Brady will have a lot of targets to spread the ball to, but a healthy Stallworth should be good for big plays on a semi-regular basis. Bump him up slightly in distance scoring leagues.
Stallworth finally stayed healthy last year and parlayed that rare circumstance into his most productive season to date. But for the second year in a row the Saints didn’t make much use of Stallworth’s blazing speed or rare leaping ability, looking to him on shorter routes. In fact, of the 70 balls Stallworth brought in last year, only one was for a gain of 40 yards or more, and that was for just 43. Stallworth’s not a great route-runner, and he tied for second in the NFL with 11 drops. That said, new quarterback Drew Brees should be an upgrade over the departed Aaron Brooks, and offensive-minded new head coach Sean Payton could take more shots down the field than his predecessor Jim Haslett.
Stallworth makes lottery ticket lists year after year, but whether it’s cranky hamstrings, dropped passes, bruised ribs or simply lack of concentration, he hasn’t yet proved a winning ticket. At 6-0, 197 pounds, Stallworth has decent size to go with blazing speed and tremendous leaping ability. But he averaged just 13.2 yards per catch last season, and caught a modest 54 percent of his 102 targets. Stallworth is heading into just his fourth season, so there’s room for growth, and if he can avoid the nagging injuries he could turn into the big-play threat that makes top target Joe Horn merely a reliable possession guy. Assuming Stallworth stays healthy in '05 (never an automatic), we like him to catch 65-70 balls for around 900 yards and seven scores.
The Human Hamstring Pull could suffer another tear walking down his driveway to get his morning paper. Never 100 percent, Stallworth couldn’t separate in ’03, catching just 45 percent of the 55 passes thrown his way. Stallworth was the talk of the Saints’ minicamp and was anointed the starter opposite Joe Horn, but we’ve heard this before. Again, upside should always be purchased at a discount, never a premium.
Rookie receivers are supposed to have a steep learning curve, but Stallworth was a quick study in 2002 -- despite missing three games and only starting about half the year, he scored eight times on a modest 42 receptions. Assuming the Saints get Stallworth into the starting lineup right away this year -- and we see no reason why they won't do just that, given that Jerome Pathon is nothing special -- we could see some serious numbers go on the board. New Orleans needs to find more ways to get the ball into Stallworth's hands, as we saw last year, he's capable of scoring from anywhere on the field.
