Hampton is unlikely to re-sign with the Steelers for the 2013 season, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He would be the second piece of what defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau has called "the best defensive line I've ever coached" to depart in as many years, joining Aaron Smith.
ANALYSIS
Pittsburgh could use Steve McLendon and Alameda Ta'amu as Hampton's replacement, putting an end to his 12-year career in a Steelers' uniform. The move makes sense, as Hampton, 36, is the oldest member of a defensive unit looking to go younger.

Hampton could start at nose tackle, but it's not clear if he'll be ready for the start of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL in his knee in January.
Hampton is not a fantasy factor, but he did have a career year of sorts in 2009. He posted personal bests in total tackles (43) and sacks (2.5). If you are in an IDP league and are in the market for stout stat lines, this is not the lineman you are looking for. His value to the Steelers will not show up via stats.
What Hampton brings to the table cannot be seen on the stat sheets. He does not rack up a ton of tackles or sacks, but his position on the line allows the playmakers on the defense to get to the ball a lot easier.
As in years past, Hampton will be a valuable commodity for the Steelers as a run-stuffing nose tackle in the their 3-4 alignment but will have no fantasy value in IDP leagues with his inability to compile sacks.
Hampton sets the tone for the Pittsburgh defense, freeing up the linebackers and Troy Polamalu to make plays behind him. The hulking nose tackle finished with 40 tackles (25 solo) with one pass defensed in 2006.
At 6-foot-1, 325 pounds, Hampton's importance to Pittsburgh's defense can't be measured in numbers. He typically occupies two defenders, freeing up space for one of the Steelers' linebackers to pressure the QB. Extremely tough against the run, Hampton usually comes out of the game in obvious passing situations. He recorded a crucial sack -- his first of the 2005 campaign -- in Super Bowl XL.
Hampton sat out the last three months of the 2004 season after tearing ligaments in his right knee. The Steelers rely on the 28-year-old nose tackle to take up two defenders, giving the linebackers room to wreak havoc on opposing offenses. Hampton reported to camp in the best shape of his career, a scary thought for Steeler opponents.
