Smith, the NFL's career rushing leader, retired on Thursday, the Associated Press reports.

ANALYSIS
Smith, who played for the Cowboys for 13 seasons and spent the last two years with Arizona, ran for 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns in his outstanding career, both NFL records. This past season, he rushed for 937 yards and nine touchdowns for the Cardinals. Hats off to Smith for a fine career that will no doubt land him in the Hall of Fame.

The future Hall-Of-Famer enters the 2004 season with the starting job over Marcel Shipp, but nobody expects him to hold it for long. A change in the offensive scheme will have the line cutting and chopping more than driving forward, and Smith, the more experienced back, should have greater success as a slasher, given his penchant for finding holes from cracks. But time is not on his side and it’s doubtful he could sustain the workload of a No. 1 without injury.

Just a few months after clearing the deck for Marcel Shipp, the Cardinals decided to waste some of their precious salary cap room on Smith, the 13-year veteran from Dallas who comes with over 4,000 NFL carries on his odometer. Smith has averaged less than four yards a carry his last two seasons and is no longer a solid short-yardage back (in his heyday he was the arguably the best short-yardage option in the NFL). Nonetheless, the Cardinals saw something they liked, so they signed him to a two-year, $8 million contract.
