Fountain was let go by the Lions on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Fountain spent all of last season on Detroit's practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract with the organization in January. He was in competition for a roster spot throughout training camp but didn't make the cut after catching just two of seven targets for 15 yards during preseason play. The Lions currently have just four healthy receivers on their roster, so they'll likely need to add some depth at the position through free agency or the waiver wire.

Fountain, who spent the early portion of his career with the Colts, spent 2021 between the Chiefs' practice squad and the active roster, including an active roster stint during the team's playoff run. He's battling for wideout slotting behind JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore.
The 2018 fifth-rounder is bouncing back from a dislocated and fractured left ankle that he suffered last August. Fountain now will look to re-prove his health with an eye toward carving out a meaningful role in Indy's passing game this coming season. With the likes of T.Y. Hilton, Parris Campbell, Zach Pascal and Michael Pittman ahead of him on the depth chart, however, a lot has to go in Fountain's favor for the 6-1, 210-pounder to achieve any fantasy utility.
The 2018 fifth-rounder failed to make the Colts' 53-man roster out of training camp, but was promoted from the practice squad in December, only to record 10 total snaps across three games. An intriguing athlete in his own right (42.5-inch vertical, 134-inch broad jump and 4.46-second 40 at his pro day), there's a wide range of possibilities in regard to Fountain's 2019 roster status, as the 23-year-old could catch on as the No. 4 or 5 receiver with a good showing during training camp. Of course, if the opposite were to occur, a bevy of names such as Zach Pascal, Deon Cain, Marcus Johnson and Chester Rogers could push Fountain off the roster entirely for a second consecutive season.
Not many receivers in the league compare to Fountain athletically, as the fifth-round rookie stands 6-foot-1 and posted a 42.5-inch vertical, 134-inch broad jump and 4.46-second 40 at his pro day in late March. The Northern Iowa product showcased these traits earlier this offseason at the East-West Shrine Game in which he ultimately took home MVP honors. With the Colts' depth chart unsettled behind top target T.Y. Hilton, there's opportunity for Fountain to make some noise as a rookie in 2018, but he'll face stiff competition for snaps from the likes of Chester Rogers, Ryan Grant and fellow rookie Deon Cain, who was taken a round later than Fountain.
