The Bills signed Cain to the practice squad Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Cain hasn't suited up for NFL regular-season action since 2020 when he played two games with the Steelers, but he's recorded 65 receptions for 787 yards and eight touchdowns in the regular season and postseason across the last two springs with the USFL/UFL's Birmingham Stallions. Now, the 2018 sixth-round pick will compete to carve out a deep depth role with Buffalo.

2018
Cain joined the Steelers mid-season last year and provided little more than roster depth at wide receiver. With JuJu Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson, James Washington and rookie Chase Claypool ahead of him, Cain will be hard-pressed for playing time if he even makes the 53-man roster.
Cain tore his ACL during his first preseason game and subsequently missed the 2018 season. His status for 2019 remains tentative, as the 22-year-old isn't expected to be at full strength until mid-way through the campaign, according to GM Chris Ballard. The team that the 2018 sixth-rounder will ultimately rejoin likely will have better pass-catching depth, though injuries to teammates may take a toll by the time he's actually ready to play in a game.
Like the departed Donte Moncrief, who left Indianapolis in free agency this offseason, Cain stands tall at 6-foot-2 and ran the 40-yard dash in the low 4.4s. However, the sixth-round rookie isn't considered as complete of a receiver as Moncrief and even has a reputation of being nothing more than a straight-line speedster. With that said, Cain instantly popped up on the fantasy radar given the potential upside of an Andrew Luck-led offense. The rookie drew rave reviews early in training camp, but a torn ACL in the first week of the preseason brought an immediate end to his campaign.

Cain was signed by the Steelers on Saturday off the Colts' practice squad.
ANALYSIS
The second-year receiver made a minimal impact in Indianapolis over seven games before losing his spot on the active roster, but with concussions having decimated Pittsburgh's receiving corps Thursday, Cain could find himself seeing significant snaps in Week 12 against the Bengals.
