Brandon Stokley: Opts to Retire
WRBaltimore Ravens
Concussion
December 26, 2013
Stokley (concussion) will retire at the end of the 2013 season, the Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Already on injured reserve with a concussion, Stokley has unsurprisingly played his last down in the NFL. His 15-year career was spent with five different organizations, and he only reached the 700-yard receiving plateau once, as part of the historic 2004 Indianapolis offense. Stokley's most memorable moment came in the first quarter of Super Bowl XXXV, when he burned Jason Sehorn for the game's first touchdown, en route to a 34-7 blowout win for the Ravens. Despite that notable moment, Stokley will be best remembered for his time with the Broncos and Colts

After appearing in only two games in 2011, Stokley returned to his former self last season, registering his most receiving yards since 2007 (544). Also, his five touchdowns matched the second highest total of his career. However, the 36-year-old receiver was not brought back by the Broncos this offseason and signed a ways into training camp with the Ravens. He will compete for the third or fourth receiving spot in training camp behind Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones and should have the opportunity to work out of the slot.
Stokley will battle for the No. 3 wideout spot against Andre Caldwell, although his history with Peyton Manning may enable him to get more balls thrown his way even as a No. 4. He was never a top wideout and isn't going to be one now, but he could find the end zone a few times this season.
Stokley briefly had an agreement to join the Redskins, but pulled out after realizing he was going to be the seventh receiver on the roster. He goes into training camp still looking for a new team, but regardless of who he ends up with, his potential fantasy production is very small.
While Stokley has hardly been a significant fantasy producer, he does seem to garner plenty of time on the field. His game-winning touchdown in Week 1 of the 2009 season put him back into many people's minds, but he finished the year with only 19 receptions for 327 yards and four touchdowns, which are hardly worthy stats for a starting fantasy spot. However, because of the overall lack of talent across the Broncos' wide receiver depth chart, Stokley could be an interesting play in deeper leagues.
Stokley has been a possession receiver with the Broncos for the past two seasons, a role he should maintain in 2009. While there are plenty of other options for quarterback Kyle Orton to throw to, Stokley always seems to have one or two solid fantasy games per season. Nevertheless, with Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Tony Scheffler, Jabar Gaffney and five running backs to distribute the ball to, Stokley's looks may now be few and far between.
Whoever wins the battle between Stokley and Darrell Jackson could make plays in what should be an improving Denver passing game. Keary Colbert is penciled in as the starter, but he's a possession receiver with a thin resume, and Stokley and Jackson have more speed and downfield upside.
Stokley is the big question mark in the Broncos' receiving corps after the team took a risk signing him to a one-year deal without knowing whether his torn Achilles' tendon will be healed by the start of the season. Even if Stokley is fully recovered, which he believes he will be, his role has yet to be determined. The Broncos hope second-year receiver Brandon Marshall impresses enough to earn the No. 2 job, which would likely leave Stokley battling the aging Rod Smith for the No. 3 job.
With the Colts turning to the running game more last season, Stokley saw his receptions fall to 41 from 68 and his touchdowns decline to just one from 10 last season. The Colts used fewer three-receiver sets and Stokley had six games where he caught one or no passes as a result. That trend doesn’t look to change this season with an unproven running game that may require an extra blocker or have opposing defenses overplaying the pass.
Perhaps the most productive third receiver in NFL history, Stokley really hurt defenses with big plays down the field. Although he had just two receptions of 40 yards or more, he had 20 (tied for 5th) of 20 yards or more and averaged 16 yards per catch. Moreover, Stokley caught 64 percent of his 107 targets and averaged 10.1 yards per pass play (among players with 100 targets, only Ashley Lelie averaged more). Of course, Stokley benefits from playing with Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, but all three are back this season, so expect Stokley to have room to roam once again. At 5-11, 197 pounds, Stokley’s not going to overpower defensive backs, but he’s got good deep speed and enough quickness to get free in the middle of the field. While Stokley will have more space to operate than virtually any receiver on the board, it’s a question whether the Colts passing game will again produce enough for three receivers (and Edgerrin James and Dallas Clark).
After missing all but one of the first 12 games of the season due to a hamstring injury and concussion, Brandon Stokley came on strong at the end of the year. In his final four regular season games, Stokley had 177 yards receiving and three touchdowns. He then added 223 yards and three touchdowns in three playoff games. As a result, Stokley could be a nice sleeper in deeper leagues as the Colts may make him more a part of the game plan in three-receiver sets.
The Colts signed Stokley, who played his first four seasons with the Ravens, as an unrestricted during the offseason. He is penciled in as the team's #3 receiver. Stokley caught a career-high 24 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns last season. Those numbers should get a modest bump because unlike the Ravens, the Colts have an effective aerial attack. Though he's probably not worth drafting, keep him in mind if Marvin Harrison or Reggie Wayne get banged up.
