After two very strong years for Houston, Brown dipped in 2009, missing nine attempts inside the 50-yard line and costing the Texans at least one game and contributing to another loss. That was the difference between watching the playoffs and participating in them. He's been a fairly reliable kicker for Houston, but was saddled with poor offenses in the early years of the franchise. Now with the offense being one of the most prolific, the team's placekicking job should be a prime one for fantasy players. The result of last season's dip is competition in this summer's training camp. Brown will compete with Neil Rackers, who is coming off an injury-marred 2009 season. The battle got underway in organized team activities in May and June, with neither establishing a status as the clear frontrunner. Watch this battle during training camp and exhibition games. This should be a productive kicking job for fantasy teams.

Brown’s fortunes have improved the last two years as Houston’s offense has improved. He’s gone from 83 points in 2006 to 115 in 2007 to 124 in 2008. Last season he also converted a career-high 87.9 percent of his field-goal attempts. Brown figures to be productive yet again, as the Texans boast one of the league’s better offenses with a big-play passing game and a 1,200-yard rusher in Steve Slaton. If quarterback Matt Schaub, who missed five games in each of the last two seasons, stays healthy this year, all the better for Brown.

The Texans took a big step forward last year, and Brown was a major benefactor. Buoyed by the improvement at quarterback, Brown's total scoring improved 32 points from 2006. Brown also has one of the stronger legs in the league as he was 5-of-5 from beyond 50 yards. He also hit on 86.2 percent of his field goal attempts (25-of-29), matching his career-high set as a rookie in 1999. The Texans, with Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson, are an up-and-coming team, and Brown should easily top 100 points again. Brown deserves an upgrade based on last year's long-range prowess, though in his previous four years he was just 3-of-11 from 50-plus. Also, the schedule shows only one potential bad weather game in December.

The Texans offense was awful last season as Brown scored just 83 points on a team that finished 28th in the league in total offense. The offensive line is still one of the worst in football, but with new quarterback Matt Schaub, there is cautious optimism. Still, Brown has been with the Texans for five years and has only broken the 100-point barrier once.

The Texans were absolutely awful on offense last season, but Brown enjoyed his best season with Houston thanks to an increase in FGAs. His 102 points was the first time he cracked the century mark since his Pittsburgh days, and his 34 FGA were 10 more than in 2004. The offense, 30th in the NFL in total yards, needs a little more than a new coach though.

Brown’s points are rising as the Texans slowly improve their offense. Still, his 85 points in 2004 were well below the season average (102.8) for a team’s kicking points. Houston scored 34 touchdowns (32 on offense), so Brown really needs to get a lot of attempts to have fantasy value. And that hasn’t happened as he averaged just 23.3 FGA in three seasons in Houston – the league average those three years is 28.9.

The Texans offense hasn’t produced enough to make Brown a fantasy-worthy kicker. In his two seasons with the Houston, Brown has just 46 FGA. Houston’s offense is improving, but it would take a quantum leap for Brown to beat the league average.

Brown's 70.8 percent field-goal accuracy in 2002 seemed to be an extension of his nightmare 2001 season in Pittsburgh when he hit just 68.2 percent. However, three of Brown's misses in Houston came from beyond the 50; he hit 15 of 19 (79 percent) inside the 50. The real problem for Brown is kicking for an expansion team. The Texans made moves to improve their offense, but it might be too much to expect more scoring opportunities for Brown. On the plus side, the team's trouble moving the ball gave Brown five attempts beyond the 50, from which he is 6 of 10 in his career.
