Unable to stay healthy after his surprising 2016 breakout, Kelley is looking to bounce back with the Saints after the Redskins let him walk. He'll need to compete for one or two available roster spots behind Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray, with Dwayne Washington, Javorius Allen, Devine Ozigbo and Matt Dayes also in the mix.
As an undrafted rookie out of Tulane in 2016, Kelley proved to be a godsend for Washington that year, stabilizing the backfield after he got a chance to start Week 8 and putting together a surprisingly productive campaign. The organization seemed unconvinced that he was a long-term solution as the lead back, and Kelley proved it right when ankle issues limited him to seven games and a miserable 3.1 YPC in 2017. He's a load to bring down at 6-0, 233, potentially making him an effective goal-line and short-yardage option, though he did drop down to 220-225 pounds in the offseason. With second-round pick Derrius Guice out for the year with a torn ACL, a slimmed-down Kelley suddenly finds himself in the mix for a key role, competing for snaps with Adrian Peterson, Samaje Perine and passing-down specialist Chris Thompson.
"Fat Rob" snuck his way onto Washington's roster after a big preseason, and once his turn to start came in Week 8, he ended any debate about who should be the team's lead back, racking up 321 rushing yards and four TDs over the next three games. Possessing good size for an NFL back, Kelley runs with a strong burst and low center of gravity, making him hard to bring down on first contact. He also saw increasing work at the goal line as the season wore on, finishing just outside the top 10 in red-zone carries in little more than half a year as the starter. However, his lack of elusiveness, the presence of pass-catching maven Chris Thompson and the selection of physical back Samaje Perine in this year's draft leaves Kelley in uncertain waters heading into his second season.
Kelley is vying for a reserve spot in Washington's backfield. An undrafted rookie free agent from Tulane, Kelley possesses the skill set to the pound the ball down the field while also contributing in pass-blocking. If he does land on the 53-man roster, he will likely only be seen during emergency situations.
