Ferguson spent his first two seasons in the NFL with Indianapolis, serving primarily in a special-teams role, before spending 2018 on the Texans practice squad. If he makes the team's Week 1 roster, Ferguson will need to be a special-teams contributor, but saw his chances improve when Lamar Miller suffered a season-ending knee injury in preseason Week 3. Duke Johnson moves up to No. 1, but Houston does not have a clear pecking order beyond that. Ferguson had modest success with the Colts as a pass-catcher for a stretch in 2016 and could become a third-down depth option in a Deshaun Watson-led offense.
Despite the departure of Frank Gore, Ferguson finds himself buried on the Colts' depth chart entering the 2018 season. Part of this is due to the fact that Indianapolis chose two running backs in this year's draft, but also because Ferguson hasn't been very effective with his touches through two professional seasons, especially as a runner, where he's averaged only 1.6 YPC on his 16 total attempts. If he's to beat the odds yet again and secure a spot on the team's 53-man roster out of training camp, it will be from his proficiency as a return man on kickoffs, not for his potential contributions on offense.
Ferguson, an undrafted free agent from Illinois, beat the odds last season to earn a spot on the Colts 53-man roster. He wasn't a consistent member of the offense, rushing for 20 yards on 15 attempts. However, he did prove to be a valuable pass-catcher out of the backfield, recording 20 receptions for 136 yards. Now heading into his second season, he'll look to take on a larger offensive role behind Frank Gore and Robert Turbin, though he will have to compete with Marlon Mack and Christine Michael to secure a roster spot.
Ferguson, an undrafted rookie, signed on with the Colts in the offseason with the hopes of battling for carries behind veteran Frank Gore, who may see a decline in action given his age. Nonetheless, Ferguson will have to compete with a crowded backfield made up of reserves such as Robert Turbin, Trey Williams, and Jordan Todman. At 23, Ferguson is a younger option in the Colts' rushing attack that could be valuable if given opportunities.
