The Seahawks are releasing Smith, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith had signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks in April after spending the 2020 season with Dallas, where he logged 48 tackles and five sacks in 16 games. In the days following that, the defensive end -- who has been subject to NFL discipline on multiple occasions -- was arrested for an alleged second-degree battery, with his arraignment reportedly scheduled for later this month, per NFL.com. With Wednesday's move, the 31-year-old's playing status going forward is uncertain.

It's been over half a decade since we saw the version of Smith that was such a terror for opposition QBs in San Francisco, and he hasn't even taken a snap in the NFL since 2015. Nonetheless, the Cowboys elected to give him another chance after he got sober and worked hard to turn his life around off the field. There's no way to know what the 30-year-old will have left in the tank as a pass rusher until he sees game action again, but with DeMarcus Lawrence and Everson Griffen as the starting bookends on the defensive line, the team doesn't need him to completely turn back the clock. Smith is at least in great physical shape, and he could contribute in a depth role.
Smith is currently suspended for violating the NFL's substance policy, and won't be eligible for reinstatement until November. However, he is also dealing with an offseason issue that could make it hard for the NFL to welcome him back in 2016. Regardless, the Raiders have shown full support of Smith, and would likely deploy him as part of their pass rush as soon as he is eligible to take the field. If that were to occur, Smith may be worth a waiver claim, but remains undraftable in IDP leagues at this point in time.
Smith served a nine-game suspension last season due to his off-field issues, finishing with a disappointing 15 tackles and two sacks through seven games. His immaturity - as opposed to his talent - is what has held him back from being an elite pass rushing contributor in IDP leagues. Smith has signed with the Raiders, but it remains to be seen when he will become a full-time member of the team's defensive corps. When he is, he has the talent to provide the Raiders' pass rush with a major boost.
Smith continues to be a polarizing asset for the 49ers. He has the physical tools to be one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, but he can't seem to stay out of his own way. Smith missed five games after receiving a DUI and being placed in rehabilitation. He still produced when he was on the field (8.5 sacks in eight starts), but he'll now miss the first nine games of the coming season due to an NFL suspension.
Smith jumped in his second year with the 49ers to the elite pass-rushing category. His physical traits and agility on the edge make him a "beast" pursuing the quarterback and he is only entering his third year in the league.
Smith’s 14-sack rookie season is extremely impressive on the surface, but it becomes even more impressive when you note that he almost always was limited to passing-down work. He didn’t start a single game last year and still managed to finish with 37 tackles. Now that he’s more than likely headed for a full-time role in 2012, Smith should be able to make a serious run at the 60-tackle mark, and a sack total any less than 12 would be a disappointment. Just realize he might face a brief suspension after an offseason DUI arrest.
Smith will transition from a 4-3 defensive end in college to playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He's going to be primarily asked to rush the passer.

Released for off-field matter

August 11, 2021
Smith, who the Seahawks released Wednesday, was cut due to an off-field matter in which he violated the team's trust, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith signed with the Seahawks in April after an impressive comeback campaign with the Cowboys in 2020, but he was arrested on a second-degree battery charge in Louisiana just two days after finalizing his deal. It's not known whether Wednesday's release stemmed directly from that incident, and to make the matter murkier, Smith had reportedly impressed Seattle's coaching staff in the team's most recent practice Tuesday.
