October 3, 2023
The Giants cut Jones from their practice squad Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones was able to find his way onto the field for the Giants as a special teams contributor during the first two weeks of the season, but now he's set to become a free agent. He hasn't handled a regular-season carry since 2019 with Houston.

If Jones makes the Bills' final roster it will mark his 11th season in the league and fourth with Buffalo. In his career he's totaled 53 rushing attempts, 19 receptions, 82 kick returns, and 68 special teams tackles. The veteran back has almost no chance of seeing meaningful carries in 2021, but he's one of the league's better special teamers and the Bills have been happy to use up a roster spot with Jones in recent years.
The 32-year-old Jones has been in the NFL since 2011 and only has 53 total rushing attempts and 26 total targets as a receiver. In 2013 and 2015 he was a good kick returner, so it is possible he'll have a chance to audition for that role in Buffalo. He also possesses good special teams skills in general, so he has a decent chance to make the squad as part of a running backs corps that has Devin Singletary and rookie Zack Moss as the top two guys, with Jones perhaps taking up the final No. 4 spot behind the winner of a T.J. Yeldon/Christian Wade/Antonio Williams battle
Jones' roster prospects took a noticeable leap when the Texans released D'Onta Foreman prior to the first preseason game, a contest in which he was the starting running back. The addition of Duke Johnson tempered expectations, but Lamar Miller's season-ending knee injury has thrown the position into flux. Johnson moves to the top of the depth chart while a pack of lesser-known backs, a list that includes Jones, compete for the second and third spots on the depth chart. He could separate himself as a kick returner.
Entering his eighth year in the league, Jones has never really gotten much of a chance to show what he can do as a running back. In his career, he's appeared in 74 games and only accumulated 44 rushing attempts and 18 receptions in total. All signs point to a modest fantasy impact from Jones again in 2018.
Jones had the most productive season of his career in only 12 games during his 2015-16 campaign but he doesn't figure to make a fantasy splash this season with such a crowded backfield in Oakland. The six-year back figures to battle with rookie DeAndre Washington and veteran Roy Helu for reps behind clear-cut starter Latavius Murray. Jones will continue to see time in the return game, however.
Jones is entering his fifth season in a Raiders' uniform after they selected him in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was originally drafted as a running back but was eventually moved to defensive back in 2013. He miss all but one game last year due to a foot injury, and the Raiders announced earlier this offseason that they'd be moving him back to running back. The team has a lot of depth at the position so it's unlikely Jones will see much time on offense, but he will be utilized in the return game and could be an impact player on special teams. He won't hold a ton of fantasy value unless the Raiders would lose multiple running backs due to injury.
A converted running back, Jones is currently buried on the Raiders' cornerback depth chart, but he will likely serve as the team's top kick return option with Jacoby Ford now with the Jets. Jones racked up 623 return yards on 26 attempts last season, with a long of 41 yards.
The Raiders will attempt to utilize Jones' speed on the defensive side of the ball, though the transition figures to take a while and IDP relevance seems highly unlikely.
Jones received just 18 touches as a rookie last year, so it’s hard to tell what type of player he’ll be in the NFL. He certainly looks electric and like a playmaker, but he’s also wiry for someone 6-0 and projects best in a complementary role. There’s perceived upside here in a run-heavy system with Michael Bush gone and starter Darren McFadden as injury prone as they come, but if McFadden went down, don’t be surprised if Mike Goodson were to get the majority of carries, leaving Jones as the change-of-pace back.
Jones was drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He's another speed guy for the Raiders, but he'll struggle to get many touches as long as Darren McFadden and Michael Bush are healthy.
