Dahl signed with the Giants on Monday, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Dahl will take over the roster spot of safety Stevie Brown, who was released Monday in a corresponding move. The 49ers had similarly cut Dahl earlier in camp, but the Giants may be able to etch out a more significant role for him on their club. Dahl appeared in 16 games last season for the Niners, producing 23 tackles and an interception.

Dahl did a serviceable job acting as a backup safety and special teams ace last season. But at 30 years old, the club may opt to go younger at the position, and their drafting of safety Jaquiski Tartt is evidence of that. Dahl could be on the outside looking when roster cuts roll around.
Dahl will fight for a roster spot in training camp. He will likely serve on the coverage team and as secondary depth in 2014.
Dahl signed a three-year deal to stay with the 49ers and is expected to compete for the vacant starting free safety position. He is ultimately expected to lose the competition but remain on the 53-man roster and contribute as a back-up and special teams performer.
Dahl will compete with Darian Stewart for the starting free safety job while also being a key special teams contributor.
Although he hails from obscure origins, the unheralded Dahl was one of the big steals among 2010 defensive back IDPs. He finished the year with 98 tackles (87 solo), one sack and two interceptions in 15 games. The North Dakota State product figures to start at free safety again for the Rams in 2011, and the absence of O.J. Atogwe could result in even more opportunities for Dahl. While it would be unwise to bank on bigger numbers than last year’s, Dahl is still improving, so more growth is certainly possible.
