Spikes was held out of Wednesday's practice due to illness, BuffaloBills.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Spikes has just a single tackle over the four games he's been active this season. While he's a good source of leadership for the Bills, his IDP days are long gone.

Spikes signed with Buffalo in the offseason and will start for the team at middle linebacker, perhaps even in a three-down role. His play count was limited in New England due knee troubles and a deep linebacker rotation, but his knee is reportedly healthy, and the Bills are fairly thin at linebacker aside from star second-year player Kiko Alonso. Since Buffalo will play with a lot of wide-nine looks on the defensive line, meaning the ends will be split out wide and away from the tackles, Spikes should get a lot of cleanup work in the middle as ballcarriers try to split the widened gaps.
Spikes, who racked up 92 tackles and five forced fumbles in 15 games last season, is slated to start at middle linebacker for the Patriots and while Jerod Mayo is New England's top IDP in the LB slot, Spikes can help out those in deeper formats.
Spikes hasn’t fulfilled it quite yet, but he has great potential as both a run stopper and an interception threat. He should be granted more snaps as he heads into his third season than he was given in the last two years, and his role in the middle of the New England defense will keep him consistently near the point of attack, an area in which he thrives. Spikes intercepted six passes and returned four for touchdowns in his three seasons at Florida, so it’s reasonable to expect his rare coverage instincts to start showing up on the stat sheet with the Patriots.
Spikes is a bit limited due to his 5.0-speed, but he was effective against the run in his rookie season and has demonstrated the ability to make big plays in coverage despite his lack of fleetness (he returned four interceptions for touchdowns in college). Gary Guyton might steal passing-down work from Spikes, but Spikes should do enough damage on first and second down to be a useful IDP nonetheless. He finished his rookie year with 61 tackles (38 solo) in 12 games.
Spikes, who will join the New England inside linebacker mix, has good intangibles and was productive in collge for Florida, but he isn't the fleetest of foot. Still, the Patriots love their Gators and they clearly view him as a good fit for their system, something the team's brass values more than where a player is listed on consensus draft boards.
