Thomas suffered his worst performance since his rookie season with San Diego in 2010. As a result, he remains behind Steve McLendon on the depth chart at nose tackle.
It remains to be seen how Pittsburgh will use Thomas and fellow defensive lineman Steve McLendon, but both should make an impact this season.
Thomas enters the season as the leading candidate to start at nose tackle. He has shown glimpses of his talent in the past, as he logged four sacks as a part-time player in 2011, but this will be his first time to shoulder the majority of the load as a starter.
Thomas had a productive second season as a pro in 2011 playing in all 16 games and notching four sacks. The Chargers see his role increasing in 2012, and he may ultimately supplant Antonio Garay as the starting nose tackle.
Thomas saw limited action during his first year with the Chargers. He played in six games, recording eight tackles and two sacks in 2010. He is expected to have an increased role in 2011 and will probably rotate in for Antonio Garay at times.
Thomas is one of many rookies whom the Chargers are expecting immediate contributions from this season. Thomas and Ogemdi Nwagbuo will be asked to replace the great Jamal Williams at nose tackle, and the smart money is on the rookie getting the majority of the playing time.
